Just bought a Pertronix ignition for my old truck. The magnetic sleeve that fit over the point cam fits loosely,is this normal? I feel that this should be a snug fit so the timing would stay consistant. Also do you need to keep the resister bypass for hot start.

Anything that allows the electronic trigger to move, even slightly, will result in erratic ignition timing, and every degree of rotation at the distributor translates to two degrees at the crankshaft. I'd reccomend using a little rubber cement, or maybe some High-temperature RTV to minimize the wobble. You can correct any timing error by turning the distributor housing, but the trigger ring shouldn't have any movement relative to the cam lobes at all.

It should fit snug, shouldn't be loose.

What size engine?

What year engine?

12v or 6v?

positive or negative ground (important for GMC)?

There are different models of Pertronix ignitions for 216/235/261 Chevrolet engines, depending on some of these factors. Maybe the geometry of the point cams are different?

I have a 6v in a 54 235 and a 12v in a 60 261, they both have a tight fit. No ballast resistor in the 60 261 (been using it for at least 8 years - different Tech Support people at Pertonix have given me conflicting stories about ballast resistors and types of coils).

Thanks for the replies. I tried the trigger on three different distributers with the same fit on all of them so I think I may have a faulty part. Measuring the cam and the trigger with a dial caliper there is about a .005 difference so I may try shimming it with some brass shim stock. The distributer is from a 62 model 235. The kit says Delco 6 cyl part no. 1168
