I need some help with this, its a 54 235 running all original except for 12 volt upgrade.
It runs good for awhile and then it will just shut off, sometimes it will back fire. If i let it sit for a few minutes it will start and run for a little bit longer. It's idling good.
I've changed the coil (the old one had liquid in it, sounded like a coke can when I shook it). The spark plug wires, new fuel filter. New points and condenser. It's getting plenty of fuel.
Any suggests would be greatly apperciated. I'm stumped on this one.
Thanks

ryan790,

This could be either electric (ignition) or fuel and it sure sounds like fuel to me. If the carburetor can't maintain fuel at the proper level, it will just slowly kill the engine. Usually an ignition problem is instantaneous, just like you shut the key off. Because it backfires, it reinforces the theory of a starved carburetor.

If you can get it to do it's thing, then before it has a chance to recover, dump a little fuel into the air horn and see if it roars to life. Watch out for back fires and barbecues.

Old fuel tanks and old rubber lines can cause problems like this. Do a little more sleuthing and see what develops. Does this sound plausible?

Is the coil wired correctly. I've seen coils get hot and quit if they're wired backward. Also, are you running a 12V coil with a ballast resistor, or a 12V coil with internal resistor?
