If the engine was rebuilt that long ago, the relief valve in the oil pump cover could be stuck in place, or the bypass valve could be stuck, or it could have been plugged by the builder. Do you have an oil pressure gauge in place, what was it reading when the engine was running? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | 3B is right. I had that problem on my 292 when I first started it up after rebuild. I had a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and it was just pegged. I had also installed a new oil pump. Turned out there is a pressure relief valve in the oil pump and it was stuck. I put another oil pump in problem solved.

There is no old gasket stuck.

Pulling the pump is a big job, I would pull the distributer and "pre-oil" the engine first to see if the valve doesn't loosen up on its own first- it worked for me after only one filter.
Find an old distributer and pull the shaft out, take off the cam gear and then get a big heavy duty drill and put the shaft in it. Stick the shaft into the distributer hole and engage the oil pump then power up the drill. Do this a few times & hopefully it might free up the valve.
