I have purchased a 10 bolt rear end from a 1970 chevelle for my 55 2nd series. I am getting ready to install it and am looking for some advice related to the rear shock locations.

I need to somehow identify the lower shock mount locations on an original axle, so I know where to put the new mounts on the 10 bolt.

(Unfortunately, I got rid of mine without thinking to measure this.)

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to make a measurement for me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check mine out. They are Pete and Jake's. The rear is a 10 bolt from a 1980 Camaro.

Thanks for the picture link and the tip. Your frame, suspension and 12 bolt look great. Nice work! What engine/tranny are you going to run?

Looks like your shocks are straight up and down and positioned very close to the leaf springs. If I remember right, the originals were at angle. Do you think the angle seen on the original even matters?

I thought about leaving the top mounts where they are and weld on the ones from Pete and Jake’s directly below. My only concern here is that the upper mounts were pretty close to the pumpkin.

I have no idea about suspensions, however, the more I think about it I have a feeling that I should move the whole set up out towards the leaf springs like you did.

Any more advice for a rookie?

Thanks again for your reply.

The original lower shock mounts on my 59 appear to be bolted to the bottom of the axle housing by the leaf spring U-bolts.

This puts them at an angle up to the upper mounts, which are riveted inboard of the springs on a crossmember.

I am not sure the original lower mounts would work with a late-model rear as they have 3" diameter and I think (but don't know for sure) the original rears were not this large. But they could possibly be modified for re-use.

You can somewhat see what I am talking about in this photo: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2556910870100598759xZZgoL?vhost=rides Note that only the right side shock is still attached in this photo.

I currently have my stock lower shock mounts still attached to my truck frame/rear diff if you would like some better pictures.

In my limited experience, when I add a more modern 9" F*rd rear-end, I am going to change the shock mounts so that the shocks are more vertical with the travel of the axle, and fabricate the mounts so that one shock is ahead of the axle and one is behind. This arrangement prevents wheel hop in the Hotchkiss-design live rear axle mounting.

Yes, moving them further out would be preferred to close to the pumpkin.

There are some books out there that address this. You could start with "Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams", and "How to Build Hot Rod Chassis by Tex Smith". Go to Amazon books and search on "chassis". Hope this helps.

Ross:
My shocks are at 60 degrees. My engine is a 350 HO crate from GM with a mild cam and 330 hp. The tranny is a 700R4 overdrive. The front suspension is a Heidt's Mustang II. Your 10 bolt will allow you to bolt on disk brakes from a 2002 Firebird.
Good luck!

Caution if you have a 3/4 ton you will need to make a change in the mount. It's not a problem just a slight migraine. grin

Big Chevy 3600 - Thanks for the information. The drivetrain you are running is what I plan on putting in next summer. I did not realize that I could put the discs on from a 2002 firebird. I may have to look around to see if I can find a setup in a local junk yard.

R-bo - Thanks to you as well. I have not thought about switching one mount to the opposite side. I will also see if I can find a copy of the Chasis Engineering book.

I will be sure to post my results when I am finished.

Looks like I have some thinking to do.

Take care!
