Anyone have any suggestions on what wiper motor to go with when I convert from the vacuum system to a 12v system?

Yes,it bolts directly in place of the original vacum motor. My newport came with the updated c clips that hold the arms in place. The wiper switch comes with it.There is a delayed wiper switch available for it.I have been told you can't have the original am radio in place. The electric version and bracket is larger than the original.

Now if you want to keep the "original" vacuum motor system... will it be compatible w/ a 12-volt system, or not? I guess I mean the switch, etc. I want to go 12V on my project and am hearing that that won't necessarily blow up all the original stuff LOL like I thought it would, that some of the OEM components WILL work under a 12V load.

The vacuum wiper motor runs off engine vacuum, or vacuum from the accessory dual-section fuel pump.

The "switch" on the dash is actually a lever that operates a valve on the motor.

So the entire wiper system is independent of the electrical system on the truck.

Exactly what leon said.
There are a lot of threads on the 12 volt conversion.I converted my truck to 12 volts a long time ago.Do a search here in the electrical forum.

stoveboltgator,

Your profile does not include information on your brand, model, year, and size of truck (in your Vehicle List). This helps people give correct information if you do not indicate a vehicle in your posting. There are a few odd considerations to consider regarding putting 6v or 12v electric wipers in 6v trucks, depending on the year and make of your truck.

Of course, as stated above, if you are sticking with the original vacuum wipers, there is nothing to worry about.

WHAT EVER you do should you remove any or all of the wiper rods and windshield drivers please do yourself a big favor and soak & clean those puppies. lubricate them w/ a good dab of grease and lithium grease in the drivers after you remove all the old crud that was on them.
re-install and you'll be a happy camper when it rains. cool

the one trick i know for (a little) help w/ a vacuum type is to add say a coffee can size can, under the dash w/ two brass tubes soldered into the can. this acts as added vacuum

So does anyone really love the vacuum wipers? I would love to keep them I just don't feel they are very reliable/safe because of the mixed speeds (traffic) I sometimes have to drive. I also drive many surface roads.

Love them ? That would be hard to do. Step on the gas to go faster and the wipers go slower.
I'm thinking maybe thats why we have electric wipers today.
I can understand your desire to keep them, but only you know where and when you are going to need them and if the vacuum ones will do the job for your needs.
You might consider Rain-X to help see through the glass. It works good and I have used it for 30 plus years, but I have noticed at times it produces a little more wiper drag but then that varies from car to car. Overall its a big help to see especially on side glass....no wipers there.

Vacuum worked (so-so) with the low gears the old bolts ran but if you have upgraded your horses and you expect to hit the highway at highway speeds you might want to reconsider the electric ones.

I think there was an option offered "back then" that was mounted under the hood which was a "holding tank" for vacummn. What Jim was talking about when he mentioned the coffee can above. WIth teh added vacumn can at least you got decent wiper action.

that was actually just a buffer Alvin, meant to prevent the wipers from stopping dead when ya put yer foot down .... my 57 panel had one, didn't really help when pulling a long hill

Electric it is! I do remember that when I got more speed the wipers seemed to skip or slow down a bit!

Thanks Guys for all the input.
