The one from a '66 C30 will most likely be the same 5.13 gear as the '54. What you need is the 4.10 3rd memeber from a '67-'72. You could also use the 4.56 gear which was std on 3/4 tons, and i beleive may have been an option on 1 tons in some years.

There used to be a good tech article on Jim Carter's website just for this. No wait it is still there.

I was recently faced with the same situation and changed out the whole rear axle assembly and got new upgraded brakes, diff, etc....
The rear axle assembly from a 1999 Chevrolet 3/4 Ton (2500) pickup fits perfectly - the backing plate to backing plate measurements were the same ! You only have to move the spring perches. As a bonus, the original driveshaft and u-joints also connected to the differential with no modifications. (U-joints for a 99 Chevy 3/4 ton with outside keepers)

My original driveshaft was approx 2" too long, but instead of cutting the driveshaft and having it welded and rebalanced, I cut the male (1") and female part (2") of the spline where it goes into the carrier bearing...and was back in business.

Works great and now I have no problems finding brake parts for my 1 ton Chevy. The new gear ratio is approx 3.77.

Mike,
how did the parking brake work out and what was the ratio? This sounds like a great swap.

The parking brake has not been hooked up yet, but I can see that it's a marriage made in heaven. The new e-brake cables both angle back towards the center of the truck frame and it looks like an easy modification. Might just need to weld a bracket to secure the cables.

ALso...I am assuming that the ratio you are referring to is the axle ratio (correct?) The axle ratio is 3.77:1.

Hi guys...thanks for your input.

Frank I tried the link but all I'm getting is a error 403 code...I'll search around and see if I can find the link.

Mike I thought about the swap you did and at some point I might end up with the same setup. I do want to keep the dual wheels.
So is that a Corp. rear or Dana 60/70 ???

Everything I have is in good working order, but I would like to try a 4.56 or 4.10 with this stock driveline.

I will be updating the driveline in the near future, I have 292/nv4500 ready to go...future plans include 19.5 wheels/tires...also will replace dump body with dumping/flatbed.

Any other thoughts or comments ? Thank...Jim

Oh...I did fix the links to my pics...I was moving them around today and had to do a fix...should be up and running.

Thank you for the question and all the feed back. We just got my 1 ton on the road (around town anyway). It has 3 on the floor with O.D. We're not sure if the O.D. works yet. Anyway, 35-40mph is about max speed at this point and we've started talking about what to do about the rear end gear ratio to get more apeed for out on the highway. Thank goodness for this site and Vintage Truck magazine, it also has helpful info. Bettyann
