I have just purchased my first stovebolt, 1958 3100 shortbox that came with a 350 installed. I cant seem to keep it running for some reason and when I release the clutch it stalls. The seller promises me that the engine was built at a speed shop several years ago and only has 10 miles on the motor at the most. The 2bbl rochester could be the problem and I cant find reverse or third gear. How hard would it be to replace the old three speed for an automatic transmission? any help is appreciated!!

Thanx,
Wes

It,s not to dificult to change but you have to remove the crossmember under the bell housing or modify it. It seems like it would be better to ohaul the linkage on your 3-speed. It sounds like its been setting around for a while. Probably needs a tuneup & carb kit. You need to give it a little gas before letting out the clutch. smile

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Yup, probably needs a tuneup and carb kit. Fresh fuel in the carb wouldn't hurt either. If the fuel is over 3 months old, drain it, refill, and let'r warm up before trying to go. Todays fuel can go bad in as little 3 months.

It could be stuck in 2 gears at same time 3 on the tree is famous for that go under the truck and move the shift linkage by hand and make sure its in neutral

Very easy fix install a 350 or 400 slide member back a little to catch auto trans bolt into crossmember. Many of our better place sell the crossmember kit.

For now: open hood and you will see shift levers off of steering post. There should be 2 slides have somebody push clutch in and take slides and move should kick out of second (problay where you are stuck.

In the transmisssion there is plastic catches for second to third. They wear out back in the 60's most junk yards had them for 50 cents, trans removal and install was the time consuming part.

I would question the seller about speed shop rebuild because of the 2 barrell. Most speed shops install 500 or 650's in those 350's. 2nd question are you sure its a 350 might be a 305 wich was more common w/2barrell.

popcorn The Truth is Out There (Wish I was there I would show you how to jerk those levers from the top. Ben)
