Tried to run some oil through the motor with the oil pump.

No dice.

Which way should I have been turning the pump anyhow?

For that matter, which direction should the rotor have been turning when prying the flywheel? I figure it I was turning the rotor CW, and the valves were opening in reverse?

Hey. If I didn't hose it up, they all moved up and down?

But the pump wasn't going to pump goop.

What now?

Clockwise

What engine?

How were you turning the oil pump?

How fast were your rotating the pump?

I was using a Binford 880 varible reversible?

Just kidding,.

It apparently is a 235 from a 55 car, since it appears to have a two bolt valve cover.

I was turning it both ways with a dewalt drill and a large screwdriver that was sacrificed yesterday. We ((drained)) the pan last night and dropped it this eve.

It was sludge. Excepting the WD-40 and PB blaster we shot through the sparkie holes for a few succesive days.

The bottom end was still wet, the cam lobes looked a bit carmelized, but flat. The bottoms of the cylinders all looked fairly square, no verticle scarring to speak of on the lower end of the stroke.

The rods got shook vigorously. My kid is a [censored] sometimes, I just wanted him to get really nasty oil schmeg all the way to his elbow so I goose chased him down that road. No play, Dad!

To his credit, he's only tested for spark once.

I'm looking at pulling the oil pump so it can be disassembled and cleaned?

You say the valve cover only has 2 bolts? That would more likely make it an earlier low pressure engine, not a '55 high pressur.
What's the serial number? It will be stamped on the machined surface just behind the distributer.

The ser no. is 030896IT55Z

The casting is 3836233.

I have a stack of pics at webshots, I'll retrieve the link and drop it in here. I posted it in another thread where someone told me what it could be.

That code does come up as '55 Passenger. Perhaps it has an older head on it? The '55s should have the 4 bolt valve cover, regardless of pasenger or truck.

Look at photos 5 and 7 and see what the date casting code is.

Does your head have four valve-cver attachment holes under the base of the valve cover (one hole is seen with a washer near it in photo five)? It is an easy matter to use an older valve cover on a high pressure 235/261.

Sludge in the pan is not uncommon because non-detergent oil was used by most people. Non-detergent oil does not hold "junk" in suspension (as does detergent oil).

Perhaps that sludge was sucked into the oil distribution system and it has solidified over time (this is most likely a "duh" suggestion)? If you cannot get oil pumping through the system, it would be a big gamble trying to start it up.

Sounds like time for an engine break-down and cleaning? However, a less drastic, non-harmful first step would be to do as your suggest - clean the oil pump and see if that allows oil to pump through the block and up through the rocker arms (the true sign of success).

Clean all the gunk you can get out of the opil pan with a scraper, then take it to the local coin car car wash and hose it down with the engine degreaser and a couple of times with hot, soapy water. Reinstall it on the engine,(don't bother with gaskets, just do a loose bolt-up) pour in a gallon of Diesel fuel, and spin the pump clockwise. The lightweight fuel should pump ok, and its solvent properties will clean out the oil passages without doing a full teardown.

Jerry,

Yes. Thanks for the useful tip on the diesel douche.

Here's tip back for some of you guys?

On a Arborist's forum, the chainsaw freaks don't really ever throw out the old dishwasher. If Wifey wants a new dishwasher 'cause the old one is sporting a touch of rust on the trim or the youngest biscuit eater dented it with his Big Wheel, or if it makes too much noise being run when you want to watch sit-coms.... Run on down to Home Cheapo and buy her a new one. After installation, you get hugs and kisses, and it isn't even her birthday.

Dumb Women.

You just got a new parts washer....

ME? I don't have the shop out back or even garage. But I saw the light bulb come on for a few out there?
