For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 10 | Today my truck overheated and blew a seam on top of the radiator. The cap never released. I suspect the previous owner put this cap on it and it's the wrong size. It says 15 lbs. Should this truck have a 7 lb cap? thanks Craig http://www.emeraldfarm.net/farm/chevy60-2.jpg | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | GMC's of the 50's used a 15 lb. cap. Later when a 50/50 coolant mixture became more common a 7 and even a 4 lb were used. I don't have the books on Chev. But the bottom line is, something went wrong that it overheated. Higher pressure raises your boiling point. Steam is created when you go over the boiling point. You probably have a plugged radiator, a defective thermostat, plugged water jacket or I have even seen impellers rust off of water pumps.A radiator cap is not meant as a safety valve in case of overheating, but rather to allow water to overflow if the radiator gets over full due to expansion. Make sure you find the cause of the overheating. Damage much more serious than splitting a radiator tank seam can be done with over heating. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | Nice looking truck Craig. I had five '60-'66 Chevrolet LCF's myself. You can see three of them here, http://www.classiccoe.com/oldcoetrucks/6066.htm As far as the radiator cap, the Chevrolet Truck Parts book calls for a Type "RC-1" cap, which opens between 6 1/4, & 7 1/2 PSI. | | |
