I currently have both an oil bath and an original "aluminum wool" air cleaner for my 235 6 cylinder in my 1955 Chevy car. I am calling the filter aluminum wool for lack of a better description. The body of the aircleaner looks about like the oil bath clearer but it has an exposed filter element of mesh wire on the outside and inside of the wool. The oil bath works ok but I want to run the "aluminum wool" one since it was the first original one for the car. The wool has deteriorated so much that it is falling apart when I try to oil it and it would go through the engine if I ran it. Does anyone know of a modern paper filter that will replace the wool. The old filter dimensions are 8 1/8 outside, 7&7/16 inside and it is 1 1/2" tall. The steel housing dictates the dimensions and there is not much room to play. I have done dimension searches on some of the major filter sites and I am not having any luck. I don't want to modify the steel housing as I am keeping the car completely original. I might try some new wool if anyone knows of a good source for it. It is so course it looks like it would pass quite a bit of grit even after oiling though? This is a daily driver and I want to protect the engine as much as possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll have to use a longer bolt, but this should work. Plus, it's reusable, so you won't have to hunt for another one.
