I have a 1948 Chevy pickup. I put in new points, plugs, new vacuum advance assy on distributor. Dinked with carb toi clean out. Engine starts and idles fine. When I put it in gear and load engine it boggs down with no power, miss es and a little poping?? Any suggestions?? THANKS DAVE

What happens if you pull the choke out?

I'm going on the assumption you already set the timing and when you rap the throttle from an idle, the distributor rotates to show the vacuum advance is working. If the above two items are set correctly them I'm guessing either a weak spark or too rich mixture.

Will it get going at all after bogging?

Engine has been converted to 12 volts. Putting in more gas with choke doesn't help, just makes engine want to flood out. When you get it in fourth gear it will run okay at steady speed, but when you slowly accelrate it will start bogging down? I am wondering to look in ingnition circuit or carb??

What procedure did you follow in setting the timing.

My 261 had the same problem. I found the vacuum advance to be sticking. Take the distributor and turn it a little clockwise. Does it turn? Does it return easily to the original position by itself?

Is the power valve stuck in the carb?

To give you an update. I had carb rebuilt by an expert who did find some internal adjustments that needed to be corrected. Put back on engine and it started right up, still has poping in exhaust and bogs down when you load engine. Put timing light on #1 and little ball is right on pointer. Purchased new vacuum advance assy from Brother's and have installed it, still same problem?? I am out of things to try??? Rechecked points setting, spark plug gap, ballast resistor connections! Any suggestions THANKS DAVE

It's time to get back to basics.

Check the compression. It should be relatively even across all the cylinders, and if you pump some oil in the cylinder (through the spark plug hole) the compression should not increase significantly.

Check the ignition system. Is the spark even on every cylinder? If you switch wires around, does the problem change? Is the condensor OK? Many times a bad condensor can cause these kinds of problems. Is there dirt tracks in the distributor cap? If you put a grounded metal object near the plug wires does the spark jump from them to the metal object? How about if you run it past each of the plug wires?
