My local Harbor Freight sells Norton Rapid Strip discs to fit their 7" sander-polishers. The price was right, so I tried one out. Boy, do they work great! I stripped a set of window sashes that had 100 years worth of gummy house paint on them. It stripped the paint right off without loading up or hurting the wood underneath. I'm sold. I had been hitting them with a heat gun and scraping them and it took an hour to do each one. I did it in less than 10 minutes with the disc and I was being careful. The disc didn't seem to lose much abrasive in the process. Looks like it would be good to strip a truck with, I'm trying that next.

Buy the 7" variable speed grinder/polisher and one of these discs from Harbor Freight and you have a very good solution for about $50.

It mounts with the 5/8 thread, just like a wire cup would. It's not found on the HF web site, it may just be a local store item.

It's about $15 normally, they had them on sale for $11.99 at the store but they sold out of them fast.

Thanks for the pic..I found a version made for a Makita sander today and bought it(on line). You needed a special attachment to mount the disk to which I wish wasn't needed but I'm looking forward to trying it with some decent rev's. I have two doors to strip..$225-$250 around here..so I'm open to elbow grease at this point in the season..This looks good. I'll also pick up the 7" if I can find one. Thanks.

Those look like the same disks that come with the Wagner Paint Eater which I bought, use and recommend. Those disks will cut through paint like nothing and not remove any metal.

I've gotten a lot of flak for so much as mentioning these things but gradually, over time even the old timers will come around.

They really are THAT good.

As an aside, I went to the Norton website and will be awarding them the prestigious "STUPIDEST WEBSITE OF THE WEEK AWARD" Don't these morons want to SELL anything? UGH!

4ONTHEFLOOR has posted a picture of the disc.

We call them scourer discs......and yes, they work a treat!

The one you have pictured is a Flap Disc.
These are no where near as effective in stripping paint, more suited to metal finishing.

You can get them at a auto paint store that sells to body shops. The ones that brsdb3381 is refering to are used in fabracating steel and used to smooth down welds after welding.

Thank you both for the clarification. I searched "Norton" on the HF site & thats what came up, and was not sure about it.

Thanks again

After reading this thread at work I ordered some online..I actually bought the 3M equivalent-5" for my Makita disc sander..Just tried it..works great..instantly takes multiple layers of paint where ever it touches..as well as bondo that you didn't know you had...Leaves a burnished look but still has a tooth for good paint adheasion. This is a keeper..

Thanks for the tip..

The Home Depots around here carry the 4 1/2" version with the 5/8" thread. They work great and it's more convenient to just run to HD when one is needed vs ordering online.
