I am now ready to start reassembling my 51 1/2 ton after a few years of setbacks.I've got the bare frame on jackstands in the garage aand am now ready to reinstall the 4 speed sm420. The transmission is lying on the floor. Can I install the bell ,the 4 shims, and the fastening collar to check for proper adjustment with the tranny just lying on the floor and not mounted on the frame? Probably a foolish question, but I want to do it right. Also the inside of the bell is scarred up somewhat, probably too bad to smooth with emery paper. Will it be ok to use it anyway or should I try to find a ggod one? If I need a better one where could I find one ? Thanks for your help in advance, you guys have helped me so many times in the past with things I knew absolutely nothing about. Elmer

Yes - follow the instructions in the Shop Manual for determining how many shims/gaskets are needed.

Maybe - Maybe not. It depends on how badly it is scarred and if the scars are near the cork seal on the retainer.

If I need a better one where could I find one ?
Jim Carter used to sell a reproduction bell/cover. He also sells used parts. You might want to call them. Or, post an ad in the Swap Meet.

The original NOS or NORS bells are also available for sale on EBay from time to time.

As long as the outside of the bell is smooth it will seal. The inside is just clearance so just knock off the sharp edges. Lapping compound works well to mate the bell to the collar.

Thanks guys; I forgot to mention that the bell was scarred up on the inside, inside the largest diameter of the bell. The outside looks mpretty good.
