It cranks and runs. I have adjusted the point gap to .18. The timing is the problem. With the engine warm, choke off and idling, I have to advance the timing at the Distributor to the full 10 marker and I can't get the ball on the flywheel to line up with the pointer. If I push on the vacuum advance, the idle comes up a bit and the ball advances to the marker. When I let go, the ball drops back.

It idles ok. When I push on the gas, the engine hesitates or back fires before increasing RPMs.

When doing the restoration, the engine ran fine before pulling the bolt ons off to clean and repaint. The distributor was removed and cleaned. Could I have rotated the gear at the bottom and gotten it on the incorrect tooth at reassembly?

I am a novice.

There is a clamp under the dist. Loosen the screw
& turn the dist. to set the timeing.

There are two adjustments, a coarse adjustment by loosening the clamp where the vacuum advance attaches to the distributor housing, and a small slot where the bracket attaches to the block. Center the slot, and use the clamp at the vacuum advance to set the timing. Small adjustments can be made as necessary with the slotted adjuster.

Absolutely perfect! I just stepped outside and did it.

Set the scale back to center.
Loosened the clamp.
Warmed the engine.
Turned the distrib until the ball hit the mark.
Tightened the screw.

I am amazed at how simple the engine is.

This is my first resto. I have the cab and interior completed. I have to get the doors, hood, fenders, and grill painted then reattached. Then I am ready for a ride.

Thank you stovebolters.

I had even better performance by setting the fine adjustment (octane selector) to 8 after first getting the ball lined up.

I've heard several people recommend this and now my spark plugs are nice and gray.
