The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop broken clutch pivot

Have a 64 chevy with a 283 3speed manual trans. Here's the deal. The clutch pivot broke at the pivot ball between the engine and the pivot. Original pivot bolt was mounted directly to engine and snapped off leaving the pivot dangling from the frame and push rods.

Trying to find replacement bolt and having some difficulty. Would like to get a new one as old ones may be fatigued and end up in same boat. Also see that some applications have a bracket mounted to engine and pivot bolt mounted to that bracket. Mine has male threaded shaft that goes into engine block.

Open for suggestions, kind of a show stopper not having a clutch that works...

64swb: You posted back on 1/17 about the same problem. You removed the broken ball stud.

What happened, did you find a replacment, and it failed again? Or are you just now getting things back together?

I know what you are talking about, the bracket that supports the clutch pivot. I don't know what block/bellhousing it was designed to fit. There are several engine/manual combos to fit these years of trucks. Unless you can round up a factory assembly manual, showing different set-ups
and part numbers to tell you what goes with what. I think the bracket you are describing mounts to the 230/250/292 6 blocks, with floor shift. On the column shift models the linkage arms are different on six and V-8 models, so maybe the bracket was just for the sixes. I have always seen the ball pivot mounted to the block, on the V-8's. But you had better check all this out, as I am not 100% sure. You might just check with local GM/Chevy dealer as they may have the pivot balls in stock, worth a shot anyway. If nothing else maybe they can set you straight on the bracket issue. Then you can always check out the local wrecking yards, there is always several 60's Chevy trucks around. Also you might want to check out what caused the ball to fail initially. Possible lack of lube? Or maybe a broken motor mount. Hope this helps.

yah, got the bolt out just fine; now trying to get back together. Had a "replacement" part shipped, but turned out to be completely different. Mailed them the broken piece for match and they didn't have anything in stock that was the same. Will check to see if there is anything that caused it to crack, but thinking probably due to age and lack of lubrication...
