For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 8 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 8 | I've got a 55 gmc 550 tandem axle,, with an inter axle differential lock on it (vacuum).. It looks like a transfer case ahead of the first axle,, with the rear drive shaft, for the rear axle, that comes "over" the first axle, to hook in on the "transfer case".. Is this common for this era? I've not seen this before on newer big trucks. Are there many problems with this kind? It looks like a heck of an angle on the shaft for the U joints. I know it's for only a second one would engage it (to get out of being stuck), but it looks strange to me. It, I was told, IS original. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . A setup like that is not found on any new trucks I know of. Old Dodge military 6x6 had a somewhat similar setup.

It has one input shaft and two outputs (one to each rear). It had 3-speeds, 2 underdrives and direct. They first started offering factory installed Tandems in 1956 on the 2-1/2 ton 8000 & 10000 Series trucks. My father had two chevrolet pulling tandems dumps(1959 models) that used this system. The twin driveshafts were prone to vibration problems, broken u joints, yokes, and had to be lubed every 1000 miles. Most truckers simply used a dead axle arrangement on their tandems, much simpler and less maintenance. The 'modern' tandem came out in 1960 with the power divider built into the front rear and just a short driveshaft between the rears. The transfer case is off the yoke on the first axle, then it comes way up to the driver side, over the axle housing, to grab the rear axle drive shaft. I know u joints need an angle to run right (most the time somewhat upward), this is up and off to the side of the truck, the rear axle drive shaft has to go. Yea, Grigg, if you would please,, I'd sure thank you.. I do have pic's of it if anyone wants to see it.. Their not the best though, its hard to get a good clean pics of it even under the truck. I sure can see how it would vibrate if one did not engage it after being stuck. ARE they gear or chain driven? It is a rather big housing for it. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . And yeah, looks like a real joy to keep goin. It is all gear driven, no chains to worry about. 1956 GMC 370 dump " 'Tater "1970 VW Volksrod "the Black Bomber" 2007 Chevy Avalanche 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Covers single reduction, 2-speed axles, plaentary double reduction, D-series tandem, M-series tandem, axle shift systems, and all the specs. the addendum covers 3-speed tandem axles. I've offered it up to the old manual project, but if anyone else would like a copy I can email it all at once. It's an Acrobat file, just under 83 MB. I also have the Eaton speed chart and a truck axle spec sheet from '64. Let me know! About 7 or 8 years ago, I came across a GMC cab /chassis in a scrapyard in Darlington County, SC. It had the Pontiac V-8 with the exact Powermatic tranny/Power Divider/Tandem axle combo as the 1956 Chevy in Grigg's pictures. I tried like crazy to buy it, but it was already sold for scrap iron. It was a cryin' shame because the live tandems are very few and far between. | | |
