Dirty Valve Gear 1

Dirty Valve Gear 2

I've decided to pull the head and give myself some time to cool off about the Holley/Weber.

What I'm concerned about is the valve retainer caps that don't have any oil on them.

Remember I have that odd valve cover with the vents, The valves aren't noisy when the engine runs.

As I understand it, lube for the valve train comes through axial holes in the pushrods

There is a LOT of crud in the valve gear. Looks like little christmas trees made ot of oily dirt.

I want to get the heads cleaned up and UF valve seats installed. The cleanup should get rid of most of the crud. The external oil filter(s) should get things cleaned up after a while.

BTW, There's a guy on EBay selling MrG remote oil filter adapters for a very low price. I got three for about $29. You might want to look into that, They are water damaged, but look new after the packaging falls off from gravity,

Getting back to reality, I think I'm looking at new lifters, pushrods and rocker arms.

But what about those internal plumbing lines. Probably best to remove them and cleanthem up?

The truck never had an o.l filter before and this is a real flyer, suppose I use two of the three remote oil filter adapters. one full flow and the other partial flow. I do know that the standard hookups to the engine, (Back of the cyliemdr head, and the other on the driver;s side center, don't cycle all the oil.

I still can't understand why an external filter will decease the running filter unless the oil pump is on is last legs.

starkweatherr,

Your pictures are typical of an old engine in a old truck that hasn't had care or has sat for a extended period of time.

The pushrods are solid. The oil comes from the rear cam bearing via a tube that terminates in the center oiler. The center oiler is located dead center of the rocker assembly. It has a curved overflow tube attached to it. The rocker shafts are hollow with small holes on the bottom which allows oil to weep out between rocker and shaft.

The internal line can and will plug...it has a very small ID and not lots of flow to keep it flushed.
