I have a '49 1/2-ton chevy, and I'm ready to start working on the cab. There are probably as many answers to this question as there are trucks, but I'd like to know how most folks paint their cabs?? I'm particularly interested in the floor, interior/exterior firewall, and underside. Do most of you use POR-15? I'd like to stay original with the dash and doors, which I think is brown. Thanks. | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 | I am going to use PPG 27467 Graphite Brown Metalic on my '49 interior. You should be able to find a lot of information by running a search on interior paint. Cleon | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 7 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 7 | Wrench Fetcher,
Did you use the same brown color on the dash boardand window frames?

Then I used spray can truck bed liner over that. Tried to clean a spot for a grounding strap and had to get out the grinder. I don't think I will have a problem with rust and it looks nice. http://community.webshots.com/user/macziggy4?vhost=communityHere are pictures I have been taking if you want to see how it turned out. I also put rubberized undercoating on top of the bed liner to cut down on the road noise.

It looks good. My next question is which panels get painted which color?? I've seen several threads on this subject, but I find them hard to follow. Was the entire interior of the cab, including dash, floor pan, seat frame, toe-board, firewall, kick panels, and back of cab painted metallic brown, even though much of it was covered with sound-proofing or insulation?? As I look through the door from the outside to the inside, what about the vertical panel located above the running board and below the floor? Does it get painted the interior or the exterior color? Anybody have any pictures of how the paint should look inside the cab? Thanks. | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 587 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 587 | Everything in the cab was the same color except the steering column, steering wheel, column shifter and linkage were all a brown color. But a lot of people put those the same color as cab now. I believe the brown color was just like the brown on the reproduction horn button, made by GM. Probably originally the paint coverage was not complete, like under the dash, but I would put paint on all bare surfaces. Exterior color ends at the point the exterior skin ends, so that panel you mention would be interior color.

So... that means the door frame (the vertical surfaces where the door hinges and strike plate are mounted) is also painted with the interior color, correct? | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Yes and Brian has it covered as for the dividing line. Look on the back of the door opening on the cab and you can see where the skin was spot welded just follow that all the way round the opening. And as Brian noted, that only place that would not have been originally painted inside was up under the dash except for some over spray. Under the seat, gas tank and entire seat frame was also painted. Samething on the door, the whole inside up to where the outer skin was spot welded on. When your rubber door seal is installed it will cover that dividing line.
