My friend has a 57 GMC USA built truck
It looks like a 235 annd he thinks it is a 235 since Canadian built GMCs have Chevy engines.
I thought it was probabley a 270.The valve cover is scripted GMC and the rad is different.
Do 270 look the same?
Do they take the same points?

thanks

The stamped number on the machined pad just behind the distributor will have the engine displacement as the first 3 digits if it's actually a GMC engine. (228, 270, 302, etc.) I believe the GMC's also have the two hold-down bolts through the center of the valve cover, like a 216 or early 235 Chevy, instead of the 4 small bolts around the perimeter that a late-model 235 has.

The GMCs were longer engines then the Chevys, so if it says GMC on the valve cover, its a GMC!

I'd guess that Canadian GMC said GMC on the valve cover even if they had Chevy engines. How about K'nucks?

And you would guess wrong! If it has the script it would be an American GMC motor, and should be a 270 for the 57 model year. The script changed over the years, as did the location of oil fill holes or breathers, but the 228 valvecovers will fit a 302 and everything in between.

The 216 with the acorn nuts never had CHEVROLET on the valve cover anyway, only the 235/261 does.

The GMC engines have 5 freeze plugs under the exhaust manifold instead of 4. The easiest way is to check the serial number, though.

Those are the only parts interchangeable. The bell housing is but the flywheels aren't.
