I've recently acquired a 1947 1/2 ton PU. I was wondering if they originally came in a 5 window model? If not, what was the first year the AD trucks came in a 5 window model?
Thanks for all your help.

Martin

47 had 5 windows. I believe that was the first year for 5 windows. I may be wrong, check with my wife if you don't believe me. grin

Check out the "Gallery". There are photos of 1947 5 window cab trucks there.

Hello,
Thanks for all the information. I'm going with the cut out corner windows from another cab and weld them into my '47 as was described in one of the posts to this topic. I'll try to keep pictures posted to keep everyone up to date on my (long and slow) progress.

Thanks again,
Martin

HOWEVER,FYI some '47s were carryovers from the '46 body style!

Chevrolet began producing Advance Design trucks June 9th, 1947 so most of the '47 model trucks were the carryover '46 design trucks. Advance Design trucks first appeared in show rooms June 28, 1947.

Didn't you mean June 9th, 1946?

Does anyone have any Chevrolet documents showing the 1946 body style as a 1947 model truck? The 1946-style trucks might have been registered as 1947 trucks but were they identified as a 1947 model by Chevrolet?

From March 1946 through the end of the 1946 model sales in May 1947, slightly fewer of that model/style of Chevrolet trucks were sold than the number of 1947 Advance-Design series trucks sold between June 1947 and December 1947 (about 247,000 vs 260,000). However, the total production of 1946-style Chevrolet trucks was about 327,000 trucks (1946-style trucks sold in both all of 1946 through May 1947).

It would be interesting to see the codes on door pillar ID plates from early 1947 trucks (the 1946-style trucks sold in 1947).

The codes might start like this:

3EPAxxxxxx

3 = assembly plant code
D = model year
P = 3100 1/2 ton series
A = January month of manufacture

Supposedly, the 1942-1946 model "year" designations (C or D) were used until the start of the Advance-Design production in 1947 (model year designation = E).

So my Advance Design '47 COE should have a 'D' in the second position in the serial number? I need to go look at it to find out...

I might not have stated it very clearly above: supposedly, the Advance-Design 1947 trucks had an "E" in the second position.

No Tim, you were clear enough, either I misread it at the time, or mistyped my post... My fault, not yours.

Big Chevy! No, I meant June 9th 1947. The advance design changeover was a late 1947 introduction just as the 2nd edition '55 models were a midyear introduction.
