Try your local Chevy dealer. I think they are still offered as a GM service part as there are thousands of 292's still in use. You can also try your local NAPA dealer. Why not save yourself some bucks and go to your local U-pull-it yard and get a complete set. Do you have some bent or broken? Usually it is not necessary to use new pushrods to replace a damaged few. Unless you are starting with new lifters and rockers or are going high performance in which case everything will be new anyway. If you have a used running 292, used rods will work just fine. Make sure that they are reasonably straight, are not split or frayed on the ends. Small minute cracks will start at the edge of the oil hole, and can be easily seen with a magnifying glass. An easy check for straight is to roll them across a table. Again, unless you are going for high RPM, reasonable straight is fine. No 2 pushrods will be the same length in any engine that has 10,000 miles on it. Small variations in valve fit, guide clearance, spring pressure, rocker motion and lubrication to each rocker arm will cause different wear rates and tensions on each pushrod's length. This is why some rods will bend and fail, and others will not on the same engine at the same RPM.
If Chevy or NAPA can't help there are other sources. Manley, Proform, Elgin, Moroso all make or have made pushrods for Chevy sixes. If you still have to have new and strike out with the other sources, don't worry, I am sure someone here will jump in soon with some more scoop! Happy hunting and Think Chevy!

I need "heat treated" rods to run in guides. That's were I'm coming up empty handed. A little history - my cam, lifters, push rods, springs, screw-in studs and rockers came from Clifford. All made to use stock length push rods. After assembly we were not happy with the rocker to valve stem alignment so we decided to use guides. We opened up the cast guides in the head as described in Leo's book and installed Olds guide plates. The Clifford push rods are chromemoly but they are not heat treated and will not work in guides & Clifford does not offer heat treated rods. They suggested Summit Racing. So now I am on the search for stock length, heat treated rods. Crane has a set that are .280" longer than stock. Isky, Comp Cams, Fel Pro, Crower & Super Pro do not have any. Comp Cams does make a 3/8" diameter rod but that gets into more clearance issues. Indy Cylinder Heads in Indianapolis makes custom length rods but they can not make them 11.382 long. Too long for their capabilities. I have the set from Crane that are .280" longer. I am checking all clearances, assembled hieght and roller to valve stem contact position to see if they will work, I would feel more comfortable if I could find the stock length. Thanks, Roger | | |
