The truck has the stock rear and a non stock granny 4 speed w/PTO. Either I swap the rear gears and put a TH350 in, or go with a 700R4. Thoughts, hints, drive shaft interchange part numbers? Thanks, Mike

Wired it for 4th lockup only thru a vacuum switch, with stock 350 & Qjet gets over 16mpg. Brian

May be a little more work than swapping the ring and pinion, but once the work is done there are nothing but advantages. You get 4 gears and keep a good pulling rear end, when you need it. With the TH350 and a 3.08 gear your take off acceleration will not be as good as the 700R4/stock low rear end. And you won't have as much gearing to accelerate or pass in second gear versus third in the overdrive.

I have put a 700r4 in my '66 and am looking for a driveshaft.

If I remember right, the 700r4 will burn up if not wired to lock up. Do you have more info on the vacuum switch connection? Are the '85 chevies the same wheel base as ours? Also, the rear engine/bellhousing mounts need to come out, right? Thanks, Mike

Cost next to nothing. The driveshaft I used supposedly came from shortbed Silverado of similar vintage, I didn't even cut it, fit fine(still not sure how that happened). I used a Q-jet baseplate & throttle bracket TV cable all for 85 1/2 ton Silverado so adjustment was easy, shifts good. Brian
