They work great. I will run wiring tomorrow. Pics to follow | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | Ok so this weekend, I put in new door glass, window seal tracks, wind lace stuff, re-keyed all the locks, and wired the entire truck(excpet tailights and Cab light) I connected the battery and wa la- Headlight switch is ready for replacement- the dimmer part is not functioning, same with the high beam switch and so I am getting new headlight, Brakelight, and high beam switch. I am also going to pickup a die hard 6 volt. I need to get some new instrument cluster bulbs,
I am going to replace the clutch(got a new one from a friend) and then going to install the drive line and fuel line, and exhaust, then hope to start it for the first time since I have owned the truck. If I do I will record it and post on utube with links here.
It is really coming together. This site has been very instrumental. A bunch of us are going to be installing weatherstripping etc. soon so would like to see your work.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | I will get some this weekend- The Cab strip that goes in the screw in portion- Get a pair of paper hole punch(the silver handle single hole type) use some needle nose to break off the paper guide(so the cab seal fits in- use that to punch your holes- works great-
For the other weatherstripping on the doors- CLEAN the mounting surface- then get some good rubber cement- Went on pretty easy, I left a gap on the passenger door where the lock tab goes into the door-
My fuse panel had a black cover- but the new harness is to big to fit so It is currently uncovered- I might have a friend fab an aluminum cover for me that looks retro and then put it on.
I used a couple screws on the cab seal to hold the metal retainer in place- then a punch just to mark the holes where to punch-
Oh yeah the seal that goes along the bottom of the cab and seals the cab to door- It is kind of a pain, lay those suckers out in the sun to get soft- It will make life a lot easier-
Remember soft metal in those components so be somewhat gentle. I need to pull my door handle mechanisms out and go over them so that they work/lock more smoothly-
I also need to do some cleanup/wetsanding on the current cheap paintjob- then with a little wax it will look like a fairly cheap paintjob.
My weatherstripping came in large rolls so I have plenty extra.- I will see how tight the seal is when driving- I might add a second seal line on the doors to help quiet the wind noise.
I forgot- I rebuilt the heater and put it in. It looks great- also ran the choke and throttle cables- the heater control, the ignition of course- all the instruments went in with the wiring. I have not put the horn cap in yet- but Will soon.
If you get windows- get the chrome- I debated it at first- but got them anyway and they look great with the polished stainless window trim.
I am thinking about getting a saddleblanket in tan and brown, then cutting it and installing it as my headliner- It would be flexible- so I would have to do some modifications- But it would look good- the cardboard headliner just won't do it for me-
I am also thinking about getting the saddle blanket seat cover- just because in a non a/c vehicle, vinyl gets hot, and the saddle blanket breathes- I know it is not original- but I think if done correctly would look period, and be very comfortable.

You've made great progress in a relatively short period of time, even with less-than desired funding.

Right now I need to replace- Heater thermostat valve Rochester carb Temp switch.
So yesterday, Saturday I go to the barn and begin work on the truck. I start with connecting up the fuel line flexible to hard line- I also put a ground wire from the sending unit to the cab I then put in the new battery and make all the proper electrical connections- I turn the switch and wa-la- We have lit dash lights- and the gauges jump a little when first turning on the key- I then add gasoline to the tank- Turn the key The gas gauge registers an unspecified amount Things are looking good I then make one last check that everything is clear- and Hit the starter- Nothing- So after checking the bat cables, I make a few adjustments Jump in the cab and hit the starter- RRR, RRRR ,RRRR ,RRRR but not start I repeat the starting RRR, RRRR, RRRR, RRRR Ithink it is the missing fourth R from the sound effects, but no start. So I jump out and look under the hood Fuel, air, spark are required to start an engine- Check the pump and the carb We have fuel, and pretty sure air I check the spark Yes we have spark. So- I look at the timing- way off I am used to timing john deere tractors- like the 1930's hand start vintage- so they have clear marks of when to do everything- These modern 6 volt electric start things kind of throw me- I followed everything in the manual like the part where the hole on the distributor farthest from the engine is number 1. . . .. well so I figure that it is right(no timing light) So I pull the carb- I find some stuff on the carb that needs work so I work on that awhile- I then get back to work RRR, RRRR, RRRR, RRRR nothing RRR, RRRR, RRRR, RRRR nothing By that time the day is about over(Had stuff to do last night) So I head home Last night I searched this site and found out about that making the number one hole be wherever the rotor stops when the BB is lined up with the needle- I also picked up a newer heavier braided ground wire from tractor supply. Get the wire installed, and reset the timing RRR, RRRR, RRRR, VROOOOOOOOOOOOM then it dies I almost did too. . . . . .
So then I try it again, RRR, RR-VROOOM, VROOOM, VROOM then it dies I quickly figure out that the truck won't idle- I hop out to try adjusting the carb and there is oil everywhere underneath the engine. Usually helps to tighten the nut on the oil filter housing when running and engine. So I top off the oil, tighten the lid, and clean up the truck a little- Puked out about 1/2 quart. It will run fine if I hold the pedal.
So I got some lunch and ran over to get heater hoses and came back and put in the radiator, the hoses and coolant. I crank the engine and get it run and find out two things- The heater control valve leaks- and the temp switch is only registering at about a 1/8 of an inch past 220, and then disappears- So I check all the lines- everything is fine- I can touch the engine- It is hot, but not to bad- So I am calling Classic parts to find out why the brand new switch is acting up(unless someone here knows)
So I disconnect the heater valve and use a 5/8 hose mender union to put the two lines together (I will get a new valve this week- paging Jeff at Bowtie bits, to the white courtesy phone)
I then run the engine at just off idle (using the gas pedal as the idle control) I do this for a little while with some fans assisting the cooling system
The engine smokes a little at first, then the smoke goes away(I figure the oil I put in the cylinders during rebuild burning off)
So Big sense of achievement, IT IS ALIVE!
I think a new carb is in order, there will be a post with question in driveline More later(including pic and video.) | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | I know I am slacking on the pics and stuff, Picked up a free spare 216 engine from the freebies section of the forum- had a good carter carb(now on the 49) and plenty of spare sets of push rods and lifters and such- Besides an immaculate head and block Thanks Jim and sons in Independence.
So today- got the carb set up, and installed the left front fender- wired up the head and park lights- installed the grill- Tomorrow the right front fender and headlight- Saturday the bed- Then I will drive it for the first time! WOW!!!
| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | well I know I have been lacking in the pics dept. But a little update- I put 40 miles on the truck today- a 23 mile run, then a 17. Running great- I forget to double clutch every so often on 3 and 4. (really needs it for four) I have a drip from the carter carb coming from a copper looking rivet or something on the bottom of the float assembly- I also had to pull the float and re braze the top and bottom together and fill a crack- I will buy a new one when the opportunity presents itself. Tomorrow I am planning more driving- maybe 200 miles- some quality time- but first i must do a steering adjustment- THings are running great- After getting all the bugs worked out so that she starts and doesn't flood from the bad float I changed the oil to rotella- So far so good- I have yet to put the bed on the truck- so just the front half is complete- except the floor mat- I might do that tomorrow before the drive- still carrying the fire extinguisher just in case- Having a blast- thanks stovebolters!
| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | well put another 220 miles on her today- Steering definately needs adjustment- I think the water pump is going, too bad it is brand new- I will use one off of a spare engine I picked up. Is oil seepage from the rocker arm cover normal? I will spend the next few nights and this weekend making adjustments- Carb still drips gas from a copper rivet looking thing on the bottom of the bowl(carter w-1) plan to diassembly the carb again to see if there is a way to seal that off-
Need to get the floor mat in, and get the bed mounted- I also plan while changing the water pump to flush the cooling system- us a true 50/50 mix of coolant/water- right now running about 60/40 maybe 65/35 I also want to put a shutoff valve on the water pump to heater core for the summer months- Other than that(and it is a bit of stuff) Brakes work great- plenty of power- Oh yeah get the wipers hooked back up- I love it- Pics to come someday | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | put in the floor mat and worked on a little bit more of the door seals- so far so good- With the amount I have done so far it really quiets the cab a good amount- Without insulating the floor I Think I have as much of the sound out as possible for the original sound and look- Tomorrow I am picking up a rear view mirror- I would kind of like to have one- and maybe the headliners
| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | So a few months later- I have gone through two left front tires- tread cracks, then separates- then I change the tire- I know I need new front leaf springs because they are a bit saggy- Or just refreshing at the local spring shop- But upon further investigation on the last tire change I found the outer front wheel bearing to be shot- on the left side and the inner quickly following the outer- So I ordered new bearings and will put them in this weekend- I also plan on getting the radiator rebuilt- the old core was just about shot- and I did not want to take any chances- the local shop is going to do it for me- recore- that is- Other than that it is purring right along. Plan on pulling my knee action shocks and servicing them as well at some point-
| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 502 | SO I have held off on the bearings- went ahead and ordered the new springs- Instead of rebuild- Also ordered new shackles and pivot bolts. I figure to go through the whole front end- so I will get to that as soon as deer season is over- I also plan to pull the steering wheel and change out my upper steering bearing and run the wire so the horn will work. Anyone have any advice on a good steering box service kit. Maybe which vendor's you used, and the overall satisfaction with the install?

I am in the test and repair phase, and will soon have it in the 3/4 ton. Not looking forward to drilling the cab to mount the antenna, but I will take a hit for the team for some classic tunes. Then I will be working on my enclosed portion of my driveshaft seal replaced.
I am also going to start welding up some of the cracks in the bed metal- mainly at the back end where the rolled bed caps are there are some cracks- and in the tailgate some of the welds have failed. The I will probably pull the bed off and put in my patch panel cab corners- I am not thrilled to do it, but It will be a good learning experience- then I will put some fresh rust treatment, primer and tractor paint to protect the welds and fresh metal.
