btw it is a 1945 1.5 ton | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | If it's a 1.5 ton I am assuming it's in back of the transmission. If it was set a long time, the friction band can be rusted to the drum. Get a bigger hammer and heat might help. | | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2008 Posts: 67 | thanks crenwelge, is the friction band the part that come out of the drum? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | There are 2 kinds of parking brakes on a 1 1/2 ton. One has a block inside a drum that sort of covers the u Joint right behind the trans. Another kind is a band which has frictional material around a drum on the back of the transmission. I'm not sure what type was used on a 45, but either one of them can rust to the drum after long periods of being set. If you have frictional material inside the drum it is the type we used to call Dou-grip. A am assuming the parking brake is on the back of the transmission and has a lever next to the gear shift. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 12 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 12 | I rebuilt mine on my 1942 2-1/2T firetruck and it was basically just like the one I have in my newer (early) '47. it is a lever type on left of tranny and linkaged to rear at a relay lever by rods, and again to the back and pulled another linkage that just actuated the secondary brake pads via cable and spring. . So if this sounds like yours, check all relay connections starting from frame rail next to gear box and follow back and continue checking for movement. I had to fully remove my lever assembly and rebuild sepperately for smooth movement before I put it back in. Even rebuilt, it takes a lot to hold one of these big fore trucks or simular when loaded. I would hold foot brake in hard while pulling on hand brake to make sure it held. | | |
