Hey Guys,
Today I replaced the original 1962 waterpump on the 235, and when I had the belt off, I decided to check the harmonic balancer. The pulley is loose on the balancer. eek frown One side is tight, and the otherside is loose. After I had put everything back together, I can still hear the "clackity clack". Which I thought was the waterpump, that's why I replaced it. frown

It looks like the pulley is riveted to the balancer?

I heard that the balancer has to be heated up before sliding it on the end of the crank?

How do you take off, and reinstall a harmonic balancer on a 1962 235 I6? I have replaced harmonic balancers before in the past, but not a 235. :o
TIA,
David

Chevyboy, I used a standard puller to remove the stock balancer from my 235 in the '61. Was no big deal. I replaced it with a balancer from a later 250. Took both balancers to a machine shop where they measured and cut the snout off the old balancer to make a spacer for the newer one. This gave me the extra pulley positions I'll need to run the PS pump and AC compressor. I put it back on by using light taps from a hammer cushioned by a one foot length of 2X4. Just tap it on until the snout bottoms out against the timing gear inside. I did drill and tap the end of the crank while I was at it as well. Extra insurance against it coming off in the future. There are plenty of different opinions on the re-install issue expressed in other posts here. HTH
