The maintenance manual indicates there is a glass stabilizer somewhere on the bottom(?) of the glass. I found 1 piece of channel metal with a roll to it that has thick felt stapled on it. Is this the stabilizer? If so, how does it work, and where does it go? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Did you get the rebuild kit yet? If so, you will see the channel in the kit. Try to see and copy what was in your orig. windows. you have 4 windows to check and see how they are built, If you can't figure it out from the kit, I will check the windows I have for sale on here. they are removed and I should be able to tell you how they are built.

The manual refers to the stabilizer, but no picture of it. The windows are no problem to rebuild, but I can't figure out where the stabilizer fits, or why it is necessary. I can email a pic if intellectual curiosity is killing anyone.
I also can't figure out why the glass is not straight on the bottom at the rear-end, but has the curved plane. It slides the same straight as curved. Anyone know? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | I read the Maintenance Manual and looked at the Assy Manual and my windows. My observations: Stabilizer may be a glued on plastic or metal piece on bottom of slider to make sliding easier. If there is no piece like that in kit, you don't need it. Manual says it is on the slider and on the bottom and is "glued" on. None of my slider glass pieces have a glued on piece at the bottom. The stepped up edge on the bottom of the slider is to facilitate removal(tip up) and give less surface to make sliding easier. It may also enable a tight fit into that acute angled, small radius corner. The felt covered, metal reinforced, corrugated channel is used for the slider glass to slide in(three sides), but only as far as the slider's excursion. Red58 is the real expert and will respond as time permits. Do you have instructions with your kits?

There are no instructions with my weatherstrip kits, but I understand how to install them. I only have one "stabilizer", and it is a short metal channnel with industrial staples holding the felt to the channel. I can always email a photo of it if curiosity is killing anyone, otherwise I'll see if Red58 responds, or just not use it. Maybe I'll put it on ebay as a "very rare" stabilizer?
Thanks for the response.

Does it not look very similar to the channel supplied in the kit? Was it attached to the bottom of the sliding glass? Send pic. if possible. Or if you wish we can wait for red58 and of course there are others who may know but since no one was responding thought I would try to help and keep it at the top but it's not bringing them in? The piece was lying in the channel at the rear bottom, and has some wear where the glass slides thru it.
I appreciate your persistence. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 Sir Searchalot | | Sir Searchalot Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,983 | Roger, will wait for pic. When you and I are talking about "channel" we do not mean "frame" as is shown in Manual Sec. 3, fig. 48. The frame is the whole metal piece for both stationary and sliding window. Window "channel" is typically felt covered corrugated metal that fits into the frame and into which the glass fits. "Channel" is supplied in a long piece which you may have to trim to length before installing. this stuff is also used in the windup door window "frame". yes?

I'd say the piece you have is a piece of cats whisker material [only thing I've ever seen with stapled felt] someone stuck in there to tighten up the glass

I now have some pics of it, but I don't think I can upload to this website. I'll PM both of you, and if you reply with your email address, I can send you the pictures and see what you think. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 136 | It's not the frame,it fits in the channel, apparently, since the metal groove is the same size as the glass. If the pics are too big(5 meg), let me know and I'll resize and send again. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 58 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 58 | I did the sliders on the wife's 58 Burb about 6 months ago. There is a piece of channel that fits on the back edge of the forward piece of glass. It has cats wiskers attached to it to prevent drafts by sealing between the two windows. I did not have any other channel that attached to the glass itself. I took a few pics of the process, I can post them if you think it will help solve your problem.

It is not a piece of "division bar channel/seal" that you mention. In my opinion. It is about the size and shape of a slider handle but it's not a handle. It's only 2" long. I tried to buy it but he is unreasonable.

I was very careful to copyright the pictures before sending them, to avoid their unauthorized use for unlawful gain. There is no question that I am the only person in the world who has possession of one. I will take offers to license its reproduction, with bartamos having the right of first refusal(A gourmet burger and coke will probably do it)

I will order 1000 and they will be in my new Fall catalog. Burger and coke on it's way.
