I've read posts here about double 00 cable grounding directly to the starter for better cranking power. NG I just did the double 00 cable from the negative to the starter still the same. Question can you use two 6 volt batteries hooked up in parallel or in series to get more amps. leaving the volts the same?

Thank in advance.

Hey guys, I did the cable switch, on my '53 COE yesterday. Made a world of difference. Also installed a fresh 6 volt battery. You can't use 2 gage battery cables from your local Pep Boys, Autozone, etc., it's not as big as 2/0 gage Industrial cable. I purchased about 20 ft. of "Belden Battery Cable", from one of the local Big Truck shops. I plan to redo the battery cables on three of my COE's

Measure the voltage drop in each cable. For the hot side, use a meter directly from the PLUS post to the post on the starter.

For the "ground" side, scratch the paint off a bit of the
actual starter itself, and measure from there to the MINUS
post.

LBNL, measure + to - post on the battery while cranking.

You're gonna need a helper for all this.

Then compare. Whichever side of the wiring has the larger voltage drop is where the problem is.

Cheers!

All very good points on the cables and grounding however no one asked you if you had the points set properly and the timing properly set. Make sure you are getting proper voltage to the coil and to the distributor as well.
One more thing,, how good is the battery you have?

There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

And what shape is the starter in? Is the switch (on top of the starter) burnt to a crisp? Does it need new brushes?

If the engine is turning over slowly, check these items:
1. Charging system
2. Battery
3. Timing and ignition
4. Voltage drop, both for connection loss, and how much does voltage drop when starter engages.
5. Connections
6. Starter

Fred T makes a good point about the starter condition.50 year old parts or suspect starter "rebuilds" may cause problems. My 45 2 ton with a later 235 turns over just fine on 6 volts even though it has cheapo 2 guage cables, must be the starter, huh?
