Hi Guys,

Here's a refresher on my situation... I've got a '54 Bel Air with the '54 235, 3 speed and torque tube. The '54 block has a cracked main cap. I've also got a '60 model 235 block with the triangle side mounts.

Are the side mounts on these two blocks in the same location? Will a set of '60 side mount brackets let me hang the '60 motor in my '54 Bel-Air? I know the water pump and stuff is different. I just don't want to move the car's frame mounts.

Thanks,

Chip

As far as I know those mounts are '53-'54 only. I'm sure you could make up something to go between the '54 frame and '60 engine though. Or maybe someone already makes these? I would try calling National Chevy in St. Paul, MN. at (651)778-9522. All they deal in is '53-'54 Chev. stuff and they would know if mounts are available to adapt the newer 235 block into the '53-'54 frame.

chip: What were the results of the magnaflux checks on your '54 block? What about #1 main web area? Did you run into other block problems and abandon the '54 block or what? If good to go, did your machinist find you another #1 cap?

Or, have you decided to go with your '60 block? I told you about the mounts being bastard!! Did you ever measure locations, and give Alan a call? His '54 truck block just might work for you, if it has the same side mounts.

Unless your '54 car is going to remain a restored
"correct" stocker, no need to worry about which year block is in it. Changing blocks would really only effect the "real dollar value" of a total restoration to showroom stock condition. That's where you would have to be numbers matching engine and trans/date code correct. And this only matters when the car is judged in a show, to be year/period correct. Wide whitewalls and all!

I read Barry's post, and agree, if thats the avenue you want to take, then go for it! The main thing is to get back on the road. If you wish to keep your '54 a '54 powered car, you can always at some future time procure another '54 original block to replace in your ride.

I take it, your car is fairly stock/complete?
If you are concerned about effecting the value of your car, take a look at the bigger picture.
One word to the wise, I know you love your old Chevy, but you have to think down the road. You may have that same old '54 thirty years from now,
maybe you might want to give it to your kids or something. Or, maybe just hang on to it. And just maybe you might want to restore it to stock. So be sure to hang on to all your old engines and parts and everything. One thing for sure, thirty years from now, searching for '54 Chevy parts will be many times more DIFFICULT and COSTLY than it is today. Just my two cents worth. Have Fun!

Think Chevy! eek  smile cool

I have a 52 coupe (our engine mounts are the same 52-54) with a 54 engine. I have a 59 261 (same mounts as your 60 block) that will eventually makes its way in there.
Stovebolt Engine Co makes a set of mounts and instructions for putting it in your 54, requires a little grinding and drilling.

However, if you read the tech article about their "special" engine mounts, I think you'll see the way to making your engine mounts work by moving them.

Hi PTE,

If your motor has the '54 side mounts and good main caps, I sure could use it. I'll try to contact you.

grin

Thanks,
Chiphead
