Worked fine this winter, and then a week ago it started spraying fluid out of the cap. Runs fine for a while, then all of the sudden I get a large whine and fluid spraying from the cap. I have rebuild the pump, and checked all the fittings. Seems to happen quicker when it is warmer....I have also replaced the cap. Next step was to try a new pump, but before I spend the bucks thought I would see what you all think. Appreciate your thoughts!!!

Are either of your hoses twisted or crimped, especially the return hose to the pump? The return hose should feel firm, not soft and gummy to the touch

Installed a new fitting and tried it out this evening. No leaks, but he pump made some really loud groaning sounds!! If it keeps up I'll try a new pump next!!

Groaning is anindication of air in the system. I may take a few tries of cycling the steering lock to lock, then chacking the fluid level, to get all of the air out. use caution not to cavitate the fluid.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 | Another thing that you might check. The Toyota box needs 900 PSI to operate correctly. The late GM pumps put out about 1300 PSI. If you get a new pump it will likely be set up for the higher pressure also.
I usually install 3 spacer washers in the pump control valve to obtain the correct pressure.

I ended up getting a new return hose fitting for the steering box and then purged the air as recommended above. So far it is working well!! I watch the pressure as you suggest Shopshark! Didn't realize there was that much difference in pressure. When you say you put three spacer washers in the pump control valve, how would I do that? Do they just go between the housing and the control valve, moving it out farther?
