My build of the 1954 261 engine has been on the back burner for some time now. I have recently started working on it again. We started to install the oil pump, and it is different than my original. The oil pick up tube thread hole is smaller on the new one.The position of the lines are different.Being a holiday weekend,i can't contact the machine shop i used for machine work and parts. Here are the details, what do i have.I'm also providing pictures, any help will be greatly appreciated.

new pump
melling # m-45
is shorter than original, thread holes are smaller, location of lines are different.

original gm pump
# 37023 65 GM 20 stamped on pump housing.
Is taller than replacement.

Looks like they ordered a pump body for the wrong year. I think '55 and up were different. There were a few changes through the years for pick ups and oil pan baffles too.

The oil pump from a 1954 235 looks similar to the original.I'm not sure if they are the same.

The 235 and 261 truck engines share the same oil pump between the same years.

I have two 1954 261 engines. One of them has a GMC oil pump, so that is not much help for this problem. The pump for my other one is similar to the the "original" in bowtietm's images. I'm pretty sure that the Melling is for a 55.2 or later 235-261, as the manuals and parts books show that the 1954-55.1 have the pressure regulator in the main pump body and the later pumps have the regulator in the cover. Check the Chevrolet Master parts catalog for the parts numbers. A 1954 (and probably a 1953 Powerglide) 235 pump should also fit your 1954 261.

Ed and Hoyt, thanks for the information.I went to lmc today and purchased the right oil pump for my engine. My pump is listed as the 1954-1955 1st series pump and yes the 235 is the same pump.

sealed power # 224-4142 has m-29 stamped on pump shaft housing.
melling part # m-29

Here are a couple of pics of the new pump beside the original.

1954-1955 1st oil pump

1954-1955 1st m-29 oil pump

I do have a question about the pickup tube>I will start a new post on it.

Thank you for your help,Tim
