I have recently started working on it again.We started to install the oil pump,and it is different than my original.The oil pick up tube thread hole is smaller on the new one.The position of the lines are different.Being a holiday weekend,i can't contact the machine shop i used for machine work and parts.Here are the details,what do i have.I'm also providing pictures,any help will be greatly appreciated. new pump melling # m-45 is shorter than original,thread holes are smaller,location of lines are different. original gm pump # 37023 65 GM 20 stamped on pump housing. | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 | I have two 1954 261 engines. One of them has a GMC oil pump, so that is not much help for this problem. The pump for my other one is similar to the the "original" in bowtietm's images. I'm pretty sure that the Melling is for a 55.2 or later 235-261, as the manuals and parts books show that the 1954-55.1 have the pressure regulator in the main pump body and the later pumps have the regulator in the cover. Check the Chevrolet Master parts catalog for the parts numbers. A 1954 (and probably a 1953 Powerglide) 235 pump should also fit your 1954 261.
