Can anyone tell me what year(s) rear axel would work to switch my 63 from a six bolt to a 5 bolt patten? I couldn't find any info. with a search.

If you swap out the side gears in the diff to the later 30 spline, you can use the '71-'76 axles. They will need shortened a bit due to the width difference, and regrooved for the C locks. I don't recall the exact dimension, perhaps 1/2" per axle? Then use the drums from the 5 lug axle with your existing brake assebley.

I do have a pair of 76 axels that I pulled out today and found them to be the approx. 1/2 inch to long you stated. I didn't think about making them shorter, may have to look into it. I was hoping to find an easier way, but will consider.
Thanks, Rick

Any machine shop should be able to shorten/regroove them for you. Actually, swaping the axles is easier, as you won't even have to rmove the old housing from the truck. It's maybe a 20-30 minuit job to swap the gears and axle shafts. Throw in some new seals and a gasket, some gear lube and you're on your way.
