In case anyone is currently rebuilding or thinking of rebuilding a Carter W-1 carb I thought I would point some differences between the span of the many of years they were produced. I have a 41 chevy and 49 chevy both use a Carter W-1 carb. When I got the 49 running I was lazy and didn't feel the need to buy a carb kit (the accel plunger was shot other then that it was fine). I would just take to 41 carb and place on the 49. Ran great worked fine no biggy. Well this weekend I sat down and took apart both carbs now that I bought the carb kits and discovered a hidden secret. The linkage on the 49 is different then the 41 no biggy doesn't alter anything just the two big pieces can't be interchange, but the big difference that I have found is the accel plunge is different. Both carb kits came with a an accel plunger whith the same plunger. I didn't have a camera at the time so I will just have to use words. The 49 plunger is longer with a flat bottom where as the 41 is shorter with a concave bowl on the bottom of it. The carb kit came with the plungers for the 49 not the 41 so after an hour of grinding and modifying i took the given 41 plunger and turned into the 49 plunger now it works like a charm. Just thought you guys would like to know.
Also I have a question the fuel bowl is draining out the bottom via needle valve (i think that is what is called there is stick thing that goes into the fuel bowl into a hole and when you hit the gas it goes up and down not plug and unpluging it. I have taken it out inspected it and found nothing wrong. Wondering if any one has this problem or no of any solutions. I figure this may be dangerous since it is leaking onto the exhaust manifold and well kamboom rings a bell when i think of gas place heat. Thanks for any help
