My casting number is: LEA42791

When I decoded it I got that it was a '53 235 (babbitted) because of the LEA prefix

But looking at this page Engine Identification, it says that 4 bolts holding the
valve cover down is a '54-'62 235. Conflicting with the previous ID. Here is a picture

Can anyone clarify this for me.

Also, my dad has two old inline motors out of some 3100 series trucks, I got the number off one of them, it was located
on the same spot behind the distributor: 044303IT54Y

I found the T54Y part on this page

,but it was under prefixes, and since
those characters are in the middle, I'm not sure, it listed it as a '54 235, which would be about right.

The two engine codes you have given are called the engine serial numbers. They are pressed into the block in a ledge just to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block.

I think the block casting number is cast into the block to the upper right of the starter, but I think I've seen pictures of block casting numbers to the front of where the fuel pump is mounted. Maybe someone can correct/clarify this.

The T54Y code indicates a 1954 engine built in Tarrytown, NY for a Powerglide equipped passenger car or 1508 Sedan Delivery.

The LEA engine serial number is an odd one. That is a 1953 code but it would be for a low-pressure 235 engine and shoould not have the four valve-cover bolts/screws (maybe someone drilled/tapped the four holes in the head)?

What else would the casting number tell me?
And what advantage would there have been just to change the valve cover?

Could it be the block from '53, with a head from '54? And that be stock? As far as I know it is completely original.

Does the head have any serial/casting numbers?

My '53 6400 has the LEA #'s on the block. It is part of the engine serial number. My truck uses the valve cover that uses 2 studs with nuts up thru the center of the valve cover.

Yeah, the LEA is on the block, I was just wondering to see if the head had it's own casting/serial number to identify it with.

Alright, I got to go home for a few hours this week because I had a break in my final exams, I jotted down the head casting number and when I got back ran it through the site:
Cheverolet Casting Numbers

The number was:
3836848

Which comes back as a 1956 235 Head. I was fairly certain that the truck was completely original.
