My mom just gave me the title for 'Old Red' (the '51 3100 1/2 ton that has been in our family for 50 years). The ID number on the title is not the VIN found on a plate on the driver's door jamb, but is instead the serial number stamped on the block (JBA552048).

What is you all's experience? Does your title have the VIN, or the stamped engine number? I'm thinking about telling my tag agent that I want to change the number on the title to the VIN.

My 48 is titled by the motor too.I think most states at that time titled them that way.

Really is no problem. If you want you can get a reproduction VIN plate from one of the suppliers and stamp the engine number on that and install it in place of the original VIN plate. Other option is to contact your Titling agency there in OK and see how to go about changing the VIN number on the title to match that one the door.

Or you could leave it as is if you are not changing the engine out anytime soon.

Both my '49 and '53 are titled by the engine number. I called the state of Wisconsin and they told me is was proper procedure back in the day to use the engine number. They also said that as long as the original engine is still in the vehicle its easy to change the number on the title to the vin #. All I have to do is make an appointment with a state patrol officer and have him do a VIN check and sign off on the form. It can be done if the original engine is gone but they said its more difficult.

Man this is discussed a LOT. A search will get you hours of reading. The short version is most states used the engine number as the VIN through 55. Since you still have the original engine (numbers match) you are WAY ahead in the game. Any questions on how the title is handled in Oklahoma or any other state are best directed to the state DMV in which you'll be titling the vehicle.

Thanks everybody. (I should've searched, and usually do, but I didn't think about it this time for some reason). I appreciate the feedback.
