Hi Folks.....My 59/235 has a leaking oil pan gasket...While I have the pan off to replace the gasket...what about doing a poor mans engine rebuild and roll in a set of crank bearing and new oil pump...Would like to hear some of You more expierienced people's thoughts about this....THANKS

Replacing the oil pump should not be a problem. If the engine had good oil pressure before, and no main bearing knocks, I wouldn't touch them. You can take each cap off, have a look and then replace it. If there are ridges or lines on the crank, your bearings will be worn in a matching manner. If you do decide to put a new set in, you will have to let the crank down enough to clear the dowels, and that will mean removing the transmission and front timing cover.

Your 59 235 does not have dowel pinned upper main bearing halves. You can roll them in. The lower halves are doweled to the bearing cap. No shims required. Go for it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Why do you think you need new bearings? IMHO, unless you mic the crank, etc - i.e. do it right - you're probably making more headaches.

Cheers!
