John and I are working on a wheel and tire Tech Tip for big trucks.

I think we have most everything covered except the "medium sized 10 lug" as I call them.
The bolt circle measures 8.75", and the center hole diameter is 6.25", they are Hub-Piloted.

I gather they came out in the 60's or so, and lasted for a number of years on 1.5 and or 2 ton trucks, but I really don't know.
I do know they were available in 20" 3 piece lock ring type, the two piece split in the middle dangerous type, and the modern 22.5" tubeless type.

That is where y'all come in, here are the questions we need answered:
1. What years were they used?
2. What size trucks used them?
3. What makes, Chevy for sure, GMC?, other brands?
4. Was there any make/model/year that is more likely, or the most likely to have the 22.5" wheels, or are all of the trucks covered in the answer to question #1 likely suspects for having 22.5 wheels?

As a prize for helpful information I'll show y'all where to get 22.5" wheels with this bolt pattern, other than the junk yard...

Thanks,
Grigg

This bolt patern and hub size with 22.5 seams to be very hard to find used. The only vehicle that I have personally seen was a mid-80s Chevy school bus (I dont know the exact year). All the flatbed trucks that I have found with this bolt patern have 20" tube wheels.

Yes, they are somewhat difficult to find used, but my local yard has sold several sets of them, and I have seen a number of other trucks with these 22.5 wheels.

Any info as to years and such as I asked above?

Thanks,
Grigg

Hy Grigg and guys, the first mention of the pattern ten stud on 8 3/4" circle, is 1960 C50 and L50 they are referred to as "Kelsey type wheels [standard]" they continue to the S50 series, and up to the C,L,T, and S 60 series, but are not available for the heavy duty option in those series, on the heavy duty side your only options were "Budd mounting type [option 172]", or "Cast spoke wheels [standard]", those are what we commonly call "Daytons". the 70 series and above used only the "Cast spoke wheel rims [standard]", or "Budd mounting type [option 172], hope that helps.

I know my 65 C50 chevy wrecker has 10 lug 20 inch 8 3/4 lug to lug -7 1/4 hub. they are hub piloted widow makers. I for one can.t wait for your tech tips to get here. I will print them out and then go on the hunt. (what year - size - truck/bus to look for.) This place is the best.

Thanks 3B. When you say "The first mention..." Where is that? Is that a dealer brochure or something? If you could provide the reference you are getting the info from, I'd greatly appreciate it.

biglou -- What year is your C50 wrecker? And I can't wait, either -- I was up until nearly midnight again working on it... I hope it's worth the wait! But I think we'll have a modern replacement identified for you.

Grigg,

Does my 54/55 Z-series GMC 2-ton COE have the size hub you are referring to? I figure that you would know this better than I, since you dragged this truck across country.

I look forward to reading yours and John's Tech Tip.

Tim,
I thought yours were 10 lugs on 7.25", like my 2 ton,
Not the larger 8.75" that appears to be an option for 1.5 tons starting in 1960.

I checked on the bus I have seen this bolt patern on and it is an 87 Chevy short bus on a c60 chassis and they are 22.5" 10 lug with 8.75 bolt patern with 6.25" hub hole. So they are atleast used up to 1987.

Hy guys, my reference is Canadian "Chevrolet & GMC truck parts catalogue number 625" revision number 1. It covers from 1958-1962 and covers only the models of Chevrolet and GMC that were directly comparable. As far as I know this pattern was only used by GM, hope that helps.

So, here are the questions again, and the answers as I interpret them so far.

1. What years were they used?
1960-late 80's

2. What size trucks used them?
1.5 ton and later on both 1.5 and 2 ton.

3. What makes, Chevy for sure, GMC?, other brands?
Just GM

4. Was there any make/model/year that is more likely, or the most likely to have the 22.5" wheels?
No idea yet, other than guessing that later are more likely to have 22.5

Any additions or corrections?

Thanks,
Grigg

And the "prize"

Look here, in the Accuride wheel catalog:
http://www.accuridewheels.com/completeversion.pdf
Scroll down to the bottom of page 12
Accuride part number 28160

They won't be cheap, but they should be available through most any big truck tire shop.

Thanks for the help,
Grigg

Grigg and John. A friend of mine that runs a tire shop/service center gave me an accuride rim 20x6.50 the other #s are 050787 and a-k-o-s-h . I looked on the site and didnt see any such animal. It has the right lug hole 8.75 and hub pilot hole 7.25 that I need. I realise that it is probably an obsolete # But that is one of the #s to look for in a scrap yard. Hope it helps for the tech article.

Very old thread but hoping for some help. I'm looking for Either new steel replacements for my 20" 10 lug on 8.75 wheels or used. I have 4 if the wheels pictured but do not know what they are called. The fronts are definitely widow makers but all four rears are as pictured. Obviously I'd like to keep the rears but if it's not advisable could someone direct me. I've followed all the leads on the related tire threads and came up with nothing. No let me rephrase a local guy said he can get me NEW 22'S Aluminum fir 450. a piece. I don't even know if 22's will fit this lugs aren't most that size a larger stud diameter?

Thanks again for any help.

The above link is where the "Job Master" screenshot is From. I is part of a digitize document regarding wheel manufacturing in the early US. Interesting read.

Hy Unofornaio, Your picture cuts out part of the removable ring, but from what I can see I don't see a split in it. There was a type of multi-piece wheel that had a continuous removable ring, it had a cut out area in that ring that you could put a prying tool into to pry around the rim to remove the ring. I will check around here and see if I can find any wheels with that bolt pattern that aren't "Widow Makers"

Thanks 3B..mine are solid no gap. I'm thinking the wheel in the screenshot (job master) is the one I have 4 of. The ring is the same but my wheel is welded not riveted. All I need are 2 matching..ok maybe 4.

I did just get an email from Wheelsnow.com they have the Accuride replica ( it's actually different face in More flat) for 250.00 each plus shipping. This is a one piece steel wheel. That is THE ONLY real lead I've gotten. Needless to say I'm not that happy about 250.00+ a wheel but if it comes down to it it's my only option.

I can go to a 22.5 but those are no where to be found as well. The hub bore is 6.25 on mine. Here are more pictures.

I have literally called every tire Shopp in our area. NO ONE will even touch the widow makers. Which is surprising because if I'm not mistaken are there not tractor wheels out there that are dam near as dangerous?

My '63 GMC 4000 came with 8.25x20s when I bought it. I found a '65 Chevy C60 with 9.00x22.5's on it, and bought it for the wheels and tires. When I picked it up the previous owner had thrown the original 8.25x20 wheels and tires in the bed. So, both '63 GMC and '65Chevy both had them on them. They were the 10 lug , 8.75 bolt circle. JP

67 Tilt Cab 50 series here with that bolt pattern. It still has the split inner ring widowmaker on it. 20"
