The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Tranny stuck in first!

Ok, first off it's not a Chev or GMC tranny, but please give it a thought.
My daughter's '87 YJ (Wrangler) Jeep with the 5 speed Puegot trans is stuck. She drove it last night, got in to leave where she was at and pulled the shifter out of 1st to go into reverse and it wouldn't go. She says the shifter felt like it hit nuetral, but wouldn't go over far enough to go into reverse. The gears actually stayed in first. She ended up driving home last night all the way in first.
The shifter has side to side movement as if in a tighter than normal nuetral and only a little bit of fore and aft movement like it's in gear. I pulled the shifter out and it's not broken or bent. I can't see very well in to the trans and but there are no obviously bent or broken pieces. Rocking or playing with the clutch both running and off doesn't do anything.
I've searched Jeep sites and will keep looking.

Hy Freedo, being a five speed, it will probably have three shift rails. Can you look into where the shfter came out of, if you can you should see a rectangular shape, it will be laid out sideways. One part of the rectangle will not line up with the rest, if first is towards you and down on the shift pattern, then your out of place piece will be on the right side of the rectangle and forward. What you have to do is get all the pieces of the rectangle lined up and then put the shifter back in place, since it has done this once, it will do it again, something is worn causing this to happen. If it is the type of transmission with only one shift rail visible then I don't know enough about them to advise you, good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll shine a light in their again..I'm looking through the floorboard into a 2-21/2 hole in the top of the tranny. I think it only has the single rail, but I will look again.

Well it looks like the tranny is hooped! Trans shop and mechanic at work both say either the shifter fork or first gear synchro broke. Now we'll look for trans #3 in the past 5 years. Puegot trannies suck in Jeeps!
