Hi Everyone,
Does the 1962 235 distributor use a O ring, or a paper gasket?
I went and picked up one of each today, and i'm not sure which one is supposed to be used.
many thanks,
David

What part of the distributor are you referring to?

Hi 4ontheFloor,
The O ring goes in the groove on the distributor shaft.
Is it supposed to be a round, or a square shaped O ring for the 235?
The guy at the auto parts store said the paper gasket is supposed to go between the distributor, and the engine block.
He ran some different numbers on some other inlines from the early to mid 60's GM vehicles, and one of them was the paper gasket, but he said he's not sure it's for a 235.

The o-ring should be round. They get square after a while in the bore. There is no way a paper gasket would work in a 235 because of the way the vacuum advance works.

There is no O ring needed on the distributor body, the resistence of the ring may "stall" the distributer as the vacuum advance tries to rotate it.I have 3 of these engines in running trucks ,none leak a drop of oil from that area. The grooves on the lower distributer body act as an oil dam.

With all of the Chevy sixes that I've had, I've never used a gasket, and never had a problem with oil leakage out the shaft.

Tony,

Thanks. I thought I had entered the twilight zone (and I was going to look for o-rings tomorrow). I have never used or seen an o-ring or paper gasket on any 216/235/261 distributor (but I was starting to believe they we missing due to wear).

Hi Guys,
I just got done about a half hour ago with the installation, and now it's killing me to wait until tomorrow to start my truck. grin

When I pulled the old distibutor out of the 235, it had a rubber O ring on it. The old distributor came out pretty easy, and the replacement ditributor went in just as easy. smile
I didn't put the O ring on when I installed the replacement.

I did try to use an O ring once, it did bind up distributor rotation. If you look closely at the rough machined two rings on the distributor body, they are wide and shallow, not designed for round section O rings.
