I have my 53 1/2 ton down to the frame. I'm finishing MII front suspension right now. The next step is to install the 350 V8 and tranny(?). Is there a best way? What should I use as reference? Can and should I use the original tranny crossmember? Can I safely position the engine in the frame with the cab off or am I taking a big chance on firewall interference etc? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks. Ron

Ron I would think any where in the bed would be fine just make sure to secure it down go so it doesn't roll around and dent a box side!

He's an apprentice smartass, but it did make me laugh. You should spend some time with me in my shop.

I would put the cab back on the frame. I see so many V8 conversions with the same problem. Engine rubbing the body. Watch out for HEI and headers if you use them. I know its a lot of work but it will save a lot of pain later.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it

Ron go to hotrodders.com and post this question you will get tons of good advice! On there bullitin board, I would recomend a V-8 crossmember from chevyduty.com make sure to lay a level on the manifod where the carb bolts on and get the engine tranny combo level via shimming the tranny X-member (also availible at chevyduty)

If you need a tool and don't buy it, you will find you have paid for it and don't have it.

To properly position the engine and transmission in the frame you want to have the cab on the frame, column bolted to the dash, rack and pinion bolted to the cross member, all the accessories "a/c, alternator, power steering", HEI Distributor, headers on the engine and the front sheet metal with the raditor you plan on running installed. It's best not to take any chances on clearances. The reason I say to have the column and rack installed is that way you can move the engine around slightly so the steering shaft from the column to the rack will clear the headers or exhaust manifolds with the least amount of u-joints. I usually have to install 3 borgeson u-joints with a Heim joint. When you think you just about have it where you want, don't forget to break out the fender well to firewall support rods to make sure they'll fit. You shouldn't require any cutting to install the V-8 in an AD.
