On the door jamb serial number on a 50 3100. "J" is Special and "K" is Deluxe -what is the trim difference?
Could special be the 5 window and deluxe is the stainless trim???
Thanks,
Jeff

Which digit are you looking at? According to my guide, J is either a 1500 (passenger car sedan delivery, 3rd digit) or a truck built in October (4th digit, with K being November). As far as 3 or 5 window, that was a separate option from the DeLuxe cab, and is not part of the serial #.

There is no serial number character that denotes trim level as their was with the cars.

The truck that I have has the following on the door jamb tag:
14HPJ23717. According to the Chevrolet model identification chart this tells me that the "14" is Baltimore,"HP" is a 1950 3100-116 wheelbase-1/2 ton, the "J" is Special and it was the 22,716 truck produced at that plant that year.
According to the model ID chart "J" is "Special" and a "K" would be "Deluxe". What is the difference?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff,

The information in this Deciphering Your VIN Tech Tip supports Bill's information that the "J" refers to the month, October.

What ID chart are you using? Give us the link/URL if it on the Internet and we can check it out.

From all I have read on the subject the 5 window was not neccisarily a deluxe cab.The Deluxe cab was marked by stainless steel trim around the windows. The 5 window was an option.

I'll agree with that. I have seen plenty of trucks with 5 window cabs that were not Deluxe cab trucks. Even in the Task Force trucks, being a big window cab didn't mean it was a Deluxe cab. However, at least on AD trucks, I have not seen a Deluxe cab that was not a 5 window. Not saying they don't exist, just that I've never seen one myself.
BTW, Deluxe Cab- RPO 390, Corner Windows- RPO 387, Chrome Grille- RPO 386, all were separate options.
