The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Tranny Fill Plug?

I'm embarrassed to ask this, but I'm stuck:

Do I fill my transmission at the speedo cable port?

I pulled up my shop manual, and it clearly shows as Item 59 (as I recall) that there are two items labelled "Fill and Drain Plugs." The exploded view does not show where they fit on the casing.

I'm certain where the drain plug is- it is the square headed thing at the bottom of the case. I don't see any other square headed bolts on the case, only various hex heads.

I have a 4-speed manual transmission. The 3-speed transmission diagram does not even have a part labeled as a fill or a drain plug, so I can't use that as a go-by.

Don't I just remove the speedo cable and pour in 80/90 weight until it spills out a little?



Tried doing a site search, but came up empty on this subject. Shocked the heck out of me!

Hy TxLaTx, there is a fill plug, I can't truely remember, but I think it is on the right side of the case. You definately do not fill it through the speedo cable hole, someone may have swapped the original plug for a hex head pipe plug, it should be about in the middle of the case, hope that helps.

I think I know what you are talking about. In fact, I think you just explained what this impossibly out-of-place looking BOLT is doing sticking out of the case, mid-way up the right side. I wonder if, throughout the years, someone boogered up the fill plug threads, drilled it out, and retapped some humongo threads and stuck a jumbo sized (1" diameter) bolt in the place. I thought it might be used for wrapping a chain onto the case to lift it, and didn't bother with it. You never know what has been rigged up on these old trucks over the last 50 years. I'll fiddle with uber-bolt tonight and see if I can't coax it out of there. Does the fill plug point somewhat at the passenger side rear tire? This bolt is angled so that it does. It definitely does not point straight out the side of the truck, pointing under the frame under the passenger door.
