I have a 1950, 3100, 3 on the column that drives and shifts ok, then suddenly it gets stuck in either 2 or 3rd. I have to loosen the bolts on the steering column or steering box and pry the gears back into place. Then it starts shifting ok, until they get stuck again. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to fix this problem. I hope I have explained myself ok as I am not a mechanic. A friend told me I should clean it out real good and add new grease.

This is THE most asked question on the board. All you need to do is take the slop out of the linkage at the trans. Your bushing are bad. Replace them.

When it does hang up just go under the hood and pull the shifter mechanisms parallel to each other. Sometimes this is not easy IF the truck is on a grade becaus there is tension on the gears. When this happened to me I put the parking brake on then pushed my truck a bit to get the tension off the gears.

Until you fix it drive it while shifting in an exagerated manner. Go from first into neutral, actually start taking it into third before going to second and it slips right in. I had a 64 Chevy like 25 years ago and never fixed it. I just got used to driving it that way. So I forgot about it. then I lend the truck to a friend and he got stuck in a gear and I had the hood locked. He knew what to do but cussed me some afterward.

I have the same problem. Stuck in second, but it appears to NOT be the linkage. We even disconnected everything and the tranny won't budge. What say you experts? Broken or damaged fork? Gremlins? This happened on the way down as my truck (1950 GMC) was being delivered and it had to make half the trip on a flatbed. I have this beautiful new old truck and I can't even drive it. I am a sad sack.

My 51 3100 just did the same thing- stuck in first, and I was doing pull-ups from the shifter with no luck. Yes, take off the cover to the shifter box and scoop out the grease. A few things will happen. First, you'll learn how easy that silly "magical" box does its job, and second, you'll see where the slop is in the system. Mine was just outside the box where the control arms connect to the dohickeys that clamp them in place. Great terminology, I know  . Still, you've got to figure out where the play is and tighten it up. As far as I know, there are not-at least on mine-any bushings on the tranny case itself. I just did this 2 days ago, haven't even repacked the grease yet(which I'd recommend doing right away because the slop in the box will let the gears grind). Take the interior trans cover off(under the rubber mat inside the cab) and play with it, you'll learn, plus figure out where the play is. I'd bet, from the ones I've seen, that it's just outside the shifter box on the column, at the bushings there. Add washers, or replace the parts, and off you go. I just used a concoction of rubber washers and larger cotter pins to take up some of the slack, and it's easier than it ever has been to shift. But the wife is still scared of it grin . She thinks a three on the tree is some kind of witchcraft. That suits me fine, so she isn't taking it to the store or to rent movies or anything.
