Hey, I was curious if anyone can tell me how complex it is to rebuild the transmission on a 1952 1/2 ton I have never done one before but would love to try to do this one. I have the factory repair manual and it looks complicated at first glance. I have found a lot of NOS parts for my transmission. Can anyone give any tips or solutions to work around the factory tools thay list.

Do you want to take the trans apart to have a close look or is there a problem that you know of?Before you take it apart, searh out the links here on Stovebolt for replacement parts. They are easy to work on if you have reasonable automotive skills. If all else fails, check the swap meet page here for a replacement trans.

Hey Tony I am not aware of any problems w/ transmission other then it was difficult to go into gear between 1st and 2nd when I was driving the truck. I am currently doing a frameup restoration and thought it would be good to open it up and take a look inside although I am not sure what I am looking for. I was going to go by the factory manual

Hard shifting from first to second could easily be a shifter linkage problem. I think there are few of those 3 speed column shifters that work perfectly.

I overhauled my 3 speed out of my 49, it was easy. Had to replace the 1st/reverse sliding gear, that was easy, but an expensive part. Then I found it cheaper at Ida's Chevs. Brother, just my luck. Do you have the factory transmission overhaul booklet? That was a big help to me. Only place I had trouble was getting the center bearing out, it is held in with a circular clip. The booklet shows a special tool to open the clip. I improvised - trimmed down a tongue depressor, worked great!

Brian, I have the factory repair manual for my truck but no transmission manual, I have seen a few of them on ebay, Would it be worth while to have one before starting or is it much the same info as the repair manual

Information is probably the same, but the booklet has a lot more pictures, which helped me out a lot. Send me your email address, and I will scan my booklet and email it to you. Be prepared for a big download!

I have three of theses tranny's laying in my basement. One may have dibs on it, but that is not set in stone yet. Let me know if you need parts. I think they are all good, and one is out of my '48 with 22,000 miles on it. I freshend it up a bit with new seals, and first/reverse slider gear, then swapped it out to a 4 speed.
