Are you referring to an oil line that comes out of the block on the manifolds' side and then the line goes into the other side of the block on the distributor's side?
Do you have an oil filter?

The line on the drivers side should go to the oil filter (if equipped) and have a line that goes to the pressure guage (using a T if used with a filter). The only line to the rockers will be on the passenger side, behind the lifter cover on models up to '58, after which they use a drilled passage in the block. If you have an external line, then it would seem that somewhere along the line a po has done a backyard repair to fix a blocked passage/oil line.

" the head turns out to be a 55 it has no hole down through the head "
The year does not matter in regards to an external oil line from one side of the block to the other, no matter which high-pressure 235 engine year (1954-1962). Such an external oil line might not cause any harm but it is not the original plumbing and it was most likely done because of a blockage in the stock oil line (behind the push-rod cover on the distributor side of the block) that runs up to the rocker arm assembly (as posted by LONGBOX55). | | |
