I've seen several different diagrams and it is very confusing. I bought a 12-volt fuel gauge. Which connector does the sending unit wire get wired to? In one diagram it shows going to the full side. On the other it shows going to the empty side. Don't ask me why. I wired a 6-volt gauge with a voltage reducer the way one diagram goes and I think it fried the gauge. Thanks in advance. If this is the gauge in your '53, the power wire should be on the lug behind the 'E' and the sending unit would attach to the lug behind the 'F'.
Is this how your instructions read?

The Factory assembly manual shows one way and the booklet on conversion to 12 volt shows it another. In the 12-volt conversion manual that Randy Rundle did, it shows the empty side going to the sender unit and the full side to the battery with a runtz in as well (of course this is a 6-volt) That was the way I wired my 6-volt gauge with the reducer. The factory assembly manual shows the empty side going to the ignition switch and the full side to the sending unit. I think the way I described it is correct. I have read about folks on this forum who have wired it reverse...just as you had done but, the gauge didn't fizzle out.
Granted, you are installing a new 12 volt gauge, but it would be interesting to test the old suspect gauge with 6 volts and see if it indeed died from the reverse connection.
If I had to take sides on this issue, I think I would go with the assembly manual, no offense to Randy...or his typist!
