I removed the eight 9/16 bolts that were holding the mounting brackets. I noticed that they were fine thread number 5's. Is there any reason I couldn't replace these bolts with number 8's coarse thread bolts? Why did the manufacturer use the fine threads? I know that the number 8's are stronger, but are they not as flexible or maleable as the number 5's? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 159 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 159 | The mounting bracket bolts should be fine with either grade 5 or the 8's.Yes the 8 is stronger and I'm not even sure there was a grading system for bolts in 1960 so the 5 was the bolt of choice.The fine thread bolt will give you more holding strength due to the threads per inch so they would be my choice.

I went with new grade 5, fine thread bolts. I figured this type of bolt lasted 48 years without fail in a truck that was heavily used and abused. I just hope the quality of the bolts today match the quality of the bolts back then. | | |
