I did a little more playing around with the 248 in the 51 GMC 1.5 ton truck I bought last month. I filled it up with coolant so I could run it more than a few seconds at a time. After getting all the spark plug wires plugged back in to the distributor, I primed the carb with good gas and ron it for a little while. The oil looks just as clean as can be and the oil pressure gage is pegged at 60 psi almost immediatly. I didn't smell any oil burning or notice any deposits on the plugs, so I think I have a pretty good motor. I will run a compression test on it some evening to verity the health of the engine, and also a cylinder leak down test.

Anyway, what is the HP of a 248 compared to a 235 Chevy. The tag on the door says 104 HP, but that seems a little low. I am thinking of using this engine in my 51 Chevy pickup after I make the necessary mods to accomodate the longer GMC motor.

I am leaning toward parting the truck out as locating a title has been elusive, to say the least. The pinion shaft on the rear axle moves in and out and up and down, so the 3rd member is toast. The 'free' truck I can get any time (49 or 50 Chevy 1.5 ton) has a Timken rear end where the GMC has a GM rear end, so I don't think I can swap pumkins. I don't suppose the axle housings are the same. The state of Nebraska will do a title search for $1 intrastate so I may do that--I might get lucky. If I have to get a bonded title it will cost me $100, which is $50 more than I gave for the truck.

Any thoughts, facts, opinions, cash, ect you send my way would be greatly appreciated. :p
