What was the highest weight ration before the truck went to the bigger commercial body style? Last of all, is there a way to make heavy trucks get better gas milage? I was having another thought today on the 61' wrecker I wanted to create, and I wanted to know some stuff about the production of heavier apache's. What is the suggested rating for a wrecker other than a regular C-30? | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | If you like '60-'66 Chevy Wreckers. Here's one I sold a few years ago. It's a '65 Chevy LCF L80 series, that was rated at 34000lb. gvw. It had a 409 Chevy Big block engine, 5 speed trans., with a 2 spd. rear axle. It also had power steering, & full air brakes. That's a Holmes 600 Wrecker unit, on it's back. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1116214364052570246oIGbJw | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 30 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 30 | I prefer the 60/61 for the hood and dual headlights. I saw a picture of a 1961 chevy wrecker and fell in love with the truck, but I can't find that picture again thanks to my luck. | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | Yeah, I had one of them also. It was a 1960 Chevy L80 LCF, with 348 big block V8, 5 spd. trans., & 2 spd rear axle. It was a 27000lb. gvw truck. It also had power steering, & full air brakes. Check out this site, & scroll down until you see it(3rd set of pictures). http://www.classiccoe.com/oldcoetrucks/6066.htm | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 8 Junior Member | Junior Member Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 8 | i have a 61 apache 30 and apache 40 ,1 1/2 ton rated 15000 gvw.mark | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 30 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 30 | I have found a great truck to be my wrecker! Behind some guy's house is a 60/61 2T or greater dump truck, and it look's pretty solid. I suspect they are not doing much with it, because they have a few older thing's just sitting around in their yard (such as a older dodge panel truck). I first noticed thsi truck a few month's ago when my CV-TEC bus went by the house, and I just happened to be looking out the window. I am going to see if we know anybody related to those people, and see what happens from there. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 |

Also, would the frame length of a dump truck be different from a wrecker? Any answers are wanted, and I thank you for them! | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | The Viking name was used on Medium Duty Trucks from 1958 -1961. The Heavy Duty Line, in these same years were called Spartans. | | |
