A 1954 engine is setup that way stock. It is the 1955-62 engine where the problem occurs.

It's made to fit.
The block was changed and the water pump is different on a '55 2nd series and on. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 | The 54 water pump mounted differently and also had a short shaft. The later 235's had a water pump with a longer shaft and also mounted on the engine differently. The 54 235's were the engine that came in the 54's and were designed for it. The later 235's had minor differences, including the water pump and the way it mounts. It uses the 3/8" pulley and belt.

A 216 pump has an internal impeller and sits flush on the adapter plate. Later pumps had an external impeller on the rear of the pump that fit in an opening in the front of the block and won't mount on the adapter plate. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2005 Posts: 334 | The water pump for a 1954 235 has an internal impeller and will work. The later 235's had the external impeller. Samantha | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 6 | Man, where have you guys been? PLEASE, call and get a short water pump from us at Patricks! The '55 engine requires the larger diameter pulley to slow the water down! Also, use the '235 fan PLEASE NOT the '216 fan or it will SPIN 190 PERCENT of its capacity! Also, use a 180 degree thermostat and a 4 to 7 pound radiator cap. Also not a bad idea to install an overflow jug or upgrade to 4row desert cooler radiator. Many 6 cylinder websites have reprinted our swap article as to how to do this swap easily. The water pump we sell is a brand new, specially designed short shaft and shallow pulley to clear the radiator. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,317 | The question was answered....several times for the 54 engine. Nothing extra needed but the 54 pump.
Was curious AZR....for the 55-62 235 block.....does the "short shaft" relocate the pump so that an aftermarket fan will clear the harmonic balancer and center it on the radiator? Secondly, if I should have a waterpump failure, would I have to sit beside the road until UPS delivered a new "custom" pump from AZ?
I've got a pricey new short-shaft pump collecting dust in the shop and after finding it didn't address all the above questions. I went with the adaptor plate and the 216/235 pump. In the 18 months of daily driving my engine temp has rarely exceeded 180 (even with the A/C), my 6 blade fan is centered on the radiator and clears all pulley's and NAPA can hand me a replacement pump over the counter.
I can appreciate your zeal in extolling the product, but also suggest you realize that there is usually more than one solution to a problem. On this site we share information based on actual performance and not so much on supposition. If you're running a "short shaft" pump on your 55-62 engine and you're happy with it that's great! Another satisfied Patricks customer!
