I came across a few NV4500 tranny's at the Portland swap from $500 to $1000 - and some had shifters and bellhousings still attached. Of course all claimed they were "perfect". These buggers look pretty stout. Will my 292 bolt up without hassles? Anybody know how much it costs to go through one of these? ebay prices are around a grand for a rebuilt + $850 for a core charge eek

I have not ran one in a personal vehicle but had one in a fleet delivery vehicle. The truck had the 6BT Cummins turbo-diesel.Only truck in the fleet that could spin the tires eek

If you get one out of a G.M it will bolt right up.
Your right they are a VERY tough tranny.
My bro. has one in his '76 with a built big block
20,000 miles on a junkyard tranny and still works great smile he did pay like $900 for it with a bellhousing and shifter.

I need a portable GPS - went back to the Portland swap this am early - parked close and dragged along a hand truck with me. I walked the ENTIRE place again and didn't see a single NV4500 in any of the spots that I had seen them before. I did see one I hadn't seen before for $1250 sans bellhousing. I checked in with the auto wrecking dude who had his computer terminal connected to the main office and he sells them with a 90 day warrantee for $900 + $350 core charge . . . jeeze, I am an idiot for not grabbing the one on Friday for $500. frown

Ken,

Tony has this on Ebay. I have a rebuilt one to put behind my 292. No bellhousing compatibility issues and much cheaper than the NV4500.

I think that may be too light for Kens` application he intends to use it in. but will work well for a cool light duty cruiser cool

Surprised that A833 is being sold--wonder if he was displeased with it?

The NV has provisions for a PTO along with granny gear and OD in 5th. Perfect for a 292 powered COE smile

Huh? LIGHT DUTY? There are many of them around here running in the towing business, and other applications pushing the 20,000lb+ GVW threshhold and they are the ONLY part of the G.M. C-3500HD trucks that doesn't break. grin

Thermodyne, I don't think the 89mm/A833 transmission was used in anything heavier than a half-ton truck.

This is a link to NV's webpage, there is a chart of tranmissions and torque capacities New Venture
The A833 was originally the bullet proof cast iron Mopar muscle car 4 speed, way stronger than Muncie's.When adapted for OD use in GM trucks, the aluminum case probably reduced torque capacity a bit.I rebuilt the other A833 going in our 51 truck, the internals look very robust.

Yes, but the light duty comment wasn't, at least the way I read it.

Yes Thermodyne,, I was referring to the A-833 as being too light for Kens` desired application.
